Clinching is legal, excessive clinching is illegal.

How often do we get a DQ in a major fight? Mills Lane didn't disqualify Mike Tyson until he'd bitten off both of Holyfield's ears.

Also add Marco Huck/Tim Bradley Ban armpits of death. Huck he smelt like water trash, he implemented catpiss bear hug technique to his arsenal.

Ricky Hatton used the clinch as part of his style. I remember Joe Cortez having none of it against Mayweather.

Ali introduced it in high doses well before Klitschko. Ruined fights with it at times in his career !

Yes it is. It's the 2nd rule of boxing. "No wrestling or hugging allowed". I mean damn, does it get more explicit than that?

It is illegal, or it ought to be.
It's funny that it has become "excessive clinching" or "excessive holding" ...
.... how does that even make sense ? How can something be a "Legal" or legitimate DEFENSIVE tactic when used sparingly, but become a FOUL when it is used all the time ??
It makes no sense. If clinching is legitimate defensive tactic, then a boxer should be allowed to use it whenever he pleases. But the fact is it is NOT legitimate.

It became tolerated because boxing is corrupt and referees are sometimes cowardly and lazy. It's been going on forever, and because so many "Great Fighters" have been "masters of clinching", it's even become accepted and sometimes admired.
    Unfortunately.

Some say only in his last years, but it was from age 31 up'till the end of his career.

this by the way is a case of the referee warning a boxer for trying to break free out of a arm clamp.
    and countless other clinches.
