It is illegal, technically, but it's rarely penalized. Mike Tyson clinched for years, Joe Calzaghe did a ton of grabbing Jeff Lacy's left arm in their fight, go back and watch a Marciano fight, etc. the difference is that it wasn't a neutral action between Rigo and Chenko. Chenko with all that wild yanking and selling made it LOOK like something unusual was going on. It really wasn't the other guy just wasn't strong enough to neutralize him in the clinch. It's a tactic, that's why they have a name for it... The Clinch.

I really don't have a problem with the ref taking a point away as I like fast moving fights, but there is no consistency, go back and watch Salido-Chenko if you disagree.

You can you can clinch, but you can hold. A lot of guys clinch when hurt and hold on for dear life until their head is clear or try to. You can't hold because if you can hold then you can hold and hit.

You guys are arguing about something that will never change. There is clinching, and excessive clinching and holding. They are not one in the same, sorry.

Clinching isn't holding. And nobody has to seem clever to know the difference.

Well, if people want clinching to stop, maybe people shouldn't lose their minds if and when a ref dq's a fighter for clinching!

Some clinching is allowed under the rules of boxing, but holding is illegal, SOB Ward holds all the time whenever he needs to cheat................

If a fighter gets dq for clinching, as a fan you wouldn't mind. If it stops the action, fans are highly likely to agree with the ref !

Interesting point, thank you. I'll have to watch that fight again now.

In the Mayweather - Hatton fight it seemed he was breaking them up every single time Hatton was getting inside.

I've never seen this happen. I've prayed for it many a time, but I've never seen it happen.

Wlad, Ward, PBF and other big name fighters use it as an effective form of defense. Refs are paid off. That's what is really happening.

Winning by points by clinching is so subjective. According to my scorecard you’re -20 points but hey, “winning” is winning. To me it’s no different than throwing 20 low blows and getting away with it, and people saying that’s just part of boxing. No it’s not *****, that’s why it’s illegal.

I kinda agree with your point about Manny Steward changing Wlad's approach in the ring, although there were plenty of instances between rounds where Manny was pleading with Wlad to throw punches and put the opponent away. So I don't think a lot of blame is to be placed on Manny, it's just the way Wlad was wired.
