Ali was overconfident, somewhat rusty, but, in my view, he surely must have trained, just not as a matter of life and death, as the fight just about turned out to be. No man could have gone through that 15-round war without being in very good shape and, to me, this is laudable, considering Ali had been away in the land of the mortals for 3.5 years. Frazier was the better man and Ali should have crawled across the ring that night to kiss Joe's feet and, arm outstretched, per his word, proclaim him the Greatest!
