A thread about PACQUIAO, DURAN, and the HISTORY OF BOXING

Maybe it's just the immediate after-effects of an INCREDIBLE win, but I honestly feel like we witnessed something special tonight, something timeless.

    - Pacquiao won his 1st world title at flyweight.

    - One year ago he was a super-featherweight.

For those of you who frequent Classic Forum, you may recall a great thread by Russell a couple of months ago about how Roberto Duran was thought of in 1981. Now the vast majority of writers and critics did not think Duran was in the same league as older guys from the lightweight division such as Ortiz and Williams, but now that some time has past and we can reflect on Hands of Stone objectively, almost everyone agrees that Duran was a better fighter than these guys.

I think it is in our nature to downplay the brilliance of fighters of our own era, just like those guys in the 80s did with Duran.

In time, will Pacquiao's achievements mean he is thought of as one of the best ever? Personally, I have him in my top 35 OAT now - and climbing.

LOL like the ol' radab told you as soon as the match was made, it was yet another mismatch.

Pacquiao is a phenominal boxer. Diaz was a disgustingly cowardly pick. DLH ended up being even worse. And i always said Hatton was shot.

Im not just tryin to put a downer on Pacs win - i AM puating a downer on Pacs win. It was the cowards 3rd mismatch in a row.

You want me to be impressed with Pac then put him in with Mayweather and Cotto

both pacquiao and duran have managed to do well in higher weights despite their physical attributes are not suited for jumping weights unlike the body frame of dela hoya and hearns...

pac should be 18-23 ATG imo...yes, better than arguello and chavez

Hatton isn't a great opponent, but the way in which Manny won [and above his natural weight] will see him shoot up my ATG rankings. I just can't believe how good this guy is. He is going to ****ing smash Floyd.

Its hard to put into perspective now where he'll be placed on the ATG list since he's still fighting, but damn, his accomplishments are beginning to look legendary.

He is well on his way, and a fight against the JMM-PBF winner will give us a clearer idea of where he stands.

Phenomenal performance, and what a top personality.

    He was far from schooled.

Marquez was extremely competitive and arguably beat him, but Pacquiao has improved immensely since the first fight, and even since the second fight he looks better.

Great fighters often have problems with certain fighters or certain styles, it doesn't make them any less great, particularly if they overcome it and win the fight like Pacquiao did.

You clearly haven't seen either fight. Either that or you have no idea what the term 'schooled' actually means.

I dunno where the **** to put him after this. Probably around 40, but this is some acheivement as I feel he could do more. If he beats JMM Maywhether winner, theres no reason for him not to be top 20. Some career.

Better than Chavez? Maybe. Better than Arguello? No. The number of great fighters Arguello beat is staggering. He is by far the best 130 lb. champion ever.

Honestly, Pacman is beating better guys than Duran ever did moving up. And he has moved up higher than Roberto did and winning in dominant fashion. Roberto beat Leonard, but was beaten easily in the rematch and then lost to Hearns,Hagler and Benitez. Pacman is actually beating everyone.

    Radab :

"Diaz was a disgustingly cowardly pick."

You deserve to be beaten savagely.
