He was...an awesome infighter and swarme pretty much, like a mini Mike he threw multiple punches in bunches that just hits in the right place everytime,he also had a very short height that allowed him to be elusive easily, and that's what makes him able to beat and capture a past his prime Carbajal. Now,the question is...despite all this he's somehow inconsistent, like Lionel Rose, losing to his best opponents like Alberto Jimenez or Dave Boy McAuley, what's wrong with him?
Jimenez and McAuley were both outstanding fighters. Losing to them was no disgrace and Matlala was always able to come back with fine winning runs. He was, as you say, a brilliant little champion.
I loved catching him on the TV when I was younger. He, Galaxy, Fenech and Nelson are the reasons I've never ignored the lighter weights as some fans tend to do. What a cracking little fighter he was.
I see...I perhaps underestimated his records,I saw back Matlala's opponents and he had some fine names in there, with decent title holders too.
