A training trick for bad knuckles

    I have protruding knuckles on the middle finger of both hands (the knuckle that makes up the top of the fist, where the finger juts out from the hand) and from the start until now, decades later (I don’t fight but I do a boxing workout 2-3 days a week), hitting a bag results in pain and swelling.

    But an old trainer showed me this one soon after I started and I’ve used it ever since. I have never had a problem since.

    It involves a pad that extends across all four knuckles (not the thumb) that’s about that length and an inch or so wide, but there’s a trick to it.

    But you can experiment and quickly realize if you just put a pad across all knuckles, if you have protruding knuckles like me it sticks out over the problem knuckle and when you hit the bag, it still puts the same pressure on that knuckle and really accomplishes nothing.

    The trick is to cut a hole in the pad for the bad knuckle. The result, if you get the proper thickness (it has to be thick enough to basically even out or be deeper than the gap of how far the protruding knuckle sticks out above the rest. In short, the pad evens out the hitting surface so that it negates the knuckle that sticks out.

    You can make it out of a sponge (which is what the guy who taught me used). But I found a better alternative that you should be able to get at an auto parts store that’s a foamy type ‘tape’ that’s adhesive on one side and not the other — it’s used for weather guarding the gaps on camper vans and stuff to seal them off from rain/water coming inside. Comes in a big roll and if you keep it you can make new ones every time the old ones finally flatten out from use.

    Cut a strip that is twice (or three times if your knuckle sticks out that far) long enough to cover all four knuckles, bend it back over itself so the adhesive sides face each other and stick together. Put it over your knuckles and press down to make an impression — that dent will tell you where the bad knuckle is, so cut a hole out of your new pad around that impression and, voila, you’ve got a knuckle protection pad.
