What about Enrique Pinder? Came from nowhere and broke the Mexican hold on the bantamweight title. Wins against Rafael Herrera coming off his best win over Ruben Olivares and a stll good Chucho Castillo in a non title fight. He was stripped of the WBC title for not defending against Rodolfo Martinez and then lost his WBA title to big punching Romeo Anaya. The rematch with Anaya sees him ko'd in 3 again. One more fight, a points loss to solid contender Francisco Villegas and that was it, finished at 26. I'd love to see that Herrera fight and the Castillo one. I've just noticed that the Castillo fight was on the same bill as Herrera-Olivares 2 and Martinez-Kajimoto, both them fights exist.
John Stracey. He came along at just the right time to beat a shot Jose Napoles...after a defense by tko over another faded star, Hedgemon Lewis, he was served up to the very fine Carlos Palomino, who battered and stopped Stracey..ushering the brave Brit off the scene as abruptly as he found his way on to it.
Alfonso Peppermint Fraser...beat the done for Locche, then turned around only to lose in his first defense to Cervantes.
Does Ponce De Leon fit the bill? Picked up a vacant title made a few defences but beaten by most top fighters he faced, ie: Gamboa, Caballero, JM Lopez & Broner(debatable).
Hit just about as hard as anyone is entitled to, excellent hand speed and usually game as the day is long. Would have been a bigger factor in almost any other era.
Absolutely. Ponce is a great example of a fighter who knew exactly what he was, was willing to walk through fire to do EXACTLY what he needed to win fights, never threw a power shot he didn't want to hurt, and actively worked to improve. I call him one of the most improved fighters of the last 10 years. Watch his fight against Emmanuel Lucero, and the visit his bout against Escalante and Gonzalez. He's been steadily improving since his early days as a crude banger. I was also seriously impressed by his fight with Gamboa. Few fighters in this sport are as well schooled, athletic, and naturally gifted as Yuriorkis. He outstripped Ponce in every conceivable category, and still, Ponce lasted the distance, won some rounds, and made the fight less than comfortable. He had no business being anything but outclassed, and in fact offered a credible challenge and some good work. Add beating Broner to this list by finding exactly what worked and doing it till he wore it out, then finding something else. Ponce is a damn good fighter, and an even better professional.
Chavez made a career of facing iconic superstars and giving them grueling, difficult fights. Supremely underrated fighter. Intelligent aggression. Threw with great commitment, fought with passion. Was unfortunately hindered by an injury prone body. Just a bit fragile.
Baldomir is nothing like the prodigy that is Buster, although his story like few these days is that of the underdog. Both the Judah and Gatti wins were pretty good solid technical pressure fighting without physical gifts other than his Chuvaloesque chin. The Clottey fight he was getting completely outboxed but kept walking his man down and Clottey needed to headbutt to keep him off. Douglas is an outright prodigy, ATG jab, movement, counter punching, uppercuts and short hooks on the inside, 6'4 84inch reach. He had it all except dedication, which he found for both his run to the title and his Tyson fight. And then lost it with no dedication or heart against a great Holyfield performance. IMO top10 of all time H2H at his peak
Fair comments, and I for one appreciate them. Going one step further I don't think any champ can ge given the title of having a glass jaw. I've never boxed but I also am willing to bet the posts who critise boxers at an elite level for getting KO'd never boxed either. At least I respect the sport of boxing and the fighters who put their live on the lines for my entertainment enough not to degrade their efforts, and I also highly doubt any of those who make those type of posts would say the same thing in person as they do over the net. (So I personally have put the so called chin checkers on ignore). End of rant.
