I think overall the Hall of Fame in Canastota is of great benefit to the sport and a fun weekend, when fans can meet some brilliant boxing people. But like other Hall of Fames, as the quantity of fighters increases year on year, the quality is diluted. So just for a bit of fun, I have created a stricter Queensberry Rules Hall of Fame, with the following criterion. The hypothetical Hall of Fame was created in January 1942 Once a decade a vote would be held to vote in one member: A fighter who fought in the 20th Century and had retired 30 years previous. So here my picks, based on this criterion: January 1942 (for fighters who have to of been retired prior to 1-1-1912): Joe Gans January 1952 (for fighters who have to of been retired prior to 1-1-1922): Bob Fitzsimmons January 1962 (for fighters who have to of been retired prior to 1-1-1932): Harry Greb January 1972 (for fighters who have to of been retired prior to 1-1-1942): Jimmy Wilde January 1982 (for fighters who have to of been retired prior to 1-1-1952): Henry Armstrong January 1992 (for fighters who have to of been retired prior to 1-1-1962): Joe Louis January 2002 (for fighters who have to of been retired prior to 1-1-1972): Ray Robinson January 2012 (for fighters who have to of been retired prior to 1-1-1982): Muhammad Ali I suspect if this were real, Louis would of got in, in 82, and Armstrong would of got in, in 92. Also Moore has been unlucky, no one but Robinson could of got the 2002 slot, and Ali edges Moore, Charles and Burley for later this year. So, what are your picks?
terrible system, the current system might not be perfect but its a lot lot better than a system that only has 7 fighters in it after 70 years from its opening.
It would be eight fighters after seventy years. It is not commercially a viable system, but it is a way of truly only recognizing the very special fighters...
