Lewis tried to sue Tyson into a rematch then retired the same week Vitali was named his mandatory.

Lewis caught a lucky break on the stoppage and he knew in his heart he couldnt repeat it, its cool he was GETTING old, not the grandpa Lewis supporters make him out to be and he already had his legacy sealed. But any fan of boxing can clearly see there was unfinished business between these two and It damn sure wasen't Vitali that didnt want to finish it.

If Lewis was winning this fight then this thread would be legit but fact is Klitschko was winning it 4-2 and had Lewis in trouble in the second round.

Simply put, this fight was inconclusive but at the same time the stoppage was legit and win was legit, its just that we cant make conslusions out of it that Lewis would knock him out in the next round or that he was better that night.

If only Lewis was as confident in himself to win a rematch as some of the posts in this thread are, maybe we'd have seen the much needed rematch.

The win was legit, yes, but it was inconclusive, as has been said.

A mega payday, and a chance to PROVE he is the better fighter than Vitali was apparently not strong enough to overcome Lewis's lack of confidence in beating Vitali.

Lewis must've saw it like this: Better leave on an inconclusive win, than to risk it and take the strong chance of getting beaten and having it proven Vitali could beat him.

Granted, the stoppage was legit, and the win deserved. I freely admit that. But a rematch was fully warranted, and Lewis looked to be avoiding too much of a risk when he refused the rematch after balking for 6 months, given that Vitali was not hurt in the first fight, even though he lost due to cuts, and Vitali was winning on the cards when the fight was stopped. So Lewis bowing out, given this unfinished business leads one to deduce that he was not confident in his ability to beat Vitali in a rematch.

    Noone can dispute that fact.

I think Vitali lost the fight and probably would have gotten knocked down in the following round if not for the cut. However, Lewis had been hurt also, so there's no certainty in that prediction.

It says alot that Lewis didn't want the rematch.

After 4 years of retirement, having a brother who's also considered to be dominating the divsion (not sure how you can have 2 people dominate at the same time, but anyway) and an earlier post showing that he's fought ZERO of the guys currently rated top 10 in the division.

I think Bruno won the event vs Lewis too.

That pesky "actual official result" of the fight means **** all really.

There are very few facts in that entire ramble.

    the only facts are:

    • The win was legit
    • the stoppage was legit, and the win deserved
    • he lost due to cuts, and Vitali was winning on the cards when the fight was stopped
Everything else is an assumption or an opinion.

Danny Williams and the thought of Hasim Rahman sent Vitaly into retirement. FACT. (only unretiring when those guys were shot).

Lewis was ahead on the scorecards in Rahman 1. Therefore winning the event.

Am I getting the hang of this?

    Don't you think it's a little different?

We are talking about a punch that glanced Vitali's eye and cut it.

The stoppage was legit, but why would he promise Vitali a rematch?

I think he knew he was going to lose.

It's not like LL had a very long career; he had a total of 44 fights. Vitali is still fighting at 39 and probably will be defending his belt when he is 40.
