There seems to be this perception that any fighter who has a war and just one war or beatdown is shot afterwards.

Not true. YOUNG fighters come back from wars and beatdowns all the time. It's the guys older than 30 who cannot have wars without consequences.

Hearns was stopped twice brutally and still recovered.

Cotto was destroyed by Maragarito and Pacquiao and still came back.

Pacquiao was stopped twice as a teenager. He was in 2 wars with Marquez and had a total war with Morales. He came back.

Corrales was stopped by Floyd. He still came back and had wars with Castillo and still came back for Clottey and was still not shot, Clottey was just too big.

Barrera had two wars with Morales. Was hurt by Junior Jones. And was completely destructed by Pacquiao. And he was still prime when he faced Morales for the 3rd time.

What do all these fighters have in common? They were young when they had the wars. You can recover from wars if you're under the 30. The younger the better, but guys who have been in wars usually fall off a cliff fast after 30 years old.

Self confidence is a fragile thing. It can diminish shockingly fast.

True that is something that cannot really be measured.

But physically young fighters come back from the wars all the time.

Victor Ortiz is a good example of that.

Froch didn't look shot in Groves 2 and he's nearing 40 and has had many wars.

Some do, some don't. Boxrec is full of fighters with a 15-1 record, 1 being their last ever fight. That's why mental toughness is a major weapon.

It'd be interesting to have a list of who everyone thinks was ruined/left something irretrievable behind in the ring after a war and who came back.

I think we would see a list that would show a pattern. Guys who were 29/30+ and had the war probably lost something forever.

While the guys who were about 28 and under probably had little trouble bouncing back.

DeGale had a horrible loss against Groves, his only loss to date but it could be devastating. Because they have history with Groves and pre fight he was saying "If I lose, I'll give you my share of the $", he was coc¨ky. Then after all this he went in there and lost the fight by a close decision. But he managed to bounce back and now he's a major belt owner. If he didn't have that mental toughness, he'd never be a champion just because he has the size or the technique.

I think that Hagler was 30 during the Hearns war. He ate like 30 Hearns Haymakers. He never really looked quite the same after that fight.

If he was 26 he probably bounces back.

Man, Cotto took a BRUTAL beating at the end of the first Margarito fight.
