Icon status ... he's having some big shoes to fill when you factor in past generation Puerto Ricans, people haven't yet got over Tito Trinidad ... if Cotto can beat Pac then his legacy amongst this generations PR fighters will be set.

    Thoughts????

If Cotto beats Pac his place among PR's elite will be set. If Cotto ends up fighting Maywether and beats him, he will be tied with Trinidad in my eyes.

He'll never get a chance to come close to do what Trinidad did ... the comparison isn't even close but Cotto has gotten some undeserved criticism when he lost to Margarito and people were in line to replace him with Juanma Lopez ... it still remains to be seen.

    Good post !!
I have to disagree ... he would have to beat Mayweather and then he would have to beat Margarito, move up to 154 to beat a champion there ... and possibly fight at 160 against felix sturm beat him for the title.

Another things that Cotto has yet to do is unify some titles ... Tito attempted to unify titles in 3 divisions ... and had he beat Hopkins was going to fight RJJ. Not to mention ... Tito did all that when he was the same age as Cotto is now ... and he retired a 5 time, 3 division champion before he turned 30.

Tito wears a big shoe to fit.

Cotto is different but definitly THAT guy for the ricans right now. If he loses then they have a good back up in Juanma.

Imo JuanMa as much more potential than Cotto. Maybe I'm speaking too soon since JuanMa's only real good win was against Ponce de Leon.
But we'll see what he's made off when he faces Caballero :good

    Riiiiiiiight.

This is what Cotto has done recently... He knocked out a bum in a tune up (Alfonso Gomez), got on his knees for Antonio Margarito, knocked out another bum in a tune up (Michael Jennings), robbed Clottey in NY on some Puerto Rican holiday, and now he is fighting a guy that started his career at 106 pounds.

I mean if that's all it takes to become a legend, I need to get back in the gym.

I like this discussion and agree with most of you guys. The problem that I see with Cotto when we compare it to Tito is that in a point in time right around the Vargas fight Tito had a mantle of invencible since not only he was winning fights but he was KTFO and basically dominating everyone he faced. I honestly think that Cotto is definately a more fundamental sound fighter but Tito with his power and conditioning was legendary.

Cotto definately needs to win against PAC, beat Floyd, Margo (if they let him come back), and win some other tittles at least up to 154lbs since he was a champ at 140lbs in order to be close to what Tito did. However, I believe that people in the island will fall in love with Juanma the same way we all fell for Tito because of the one punch KO power.

    Let's see what happens...
