For a fighter whose nickname is Superman you would expect a supremely gifted fighter like Roy Jones Jr but Davis was actually more of a crafty boxer puncher with a good punch, stiff jab, and very solid fundamentals. Not the fastest fighter but just a good all rounder who was always in great shape and extremely tough as he was never stopped in 6 of his losses. Some very good bouts from Davis, especially his war with Mark Breland. Honestly, I’ve only seen the Breland fight so I’d have to watch a few more fights of his to pass judgement. Looking at his record, though, it’s interesting that he was never stopped, which suggests a good chin, and of his 6 losses, 4 were by majority or split decision. I’ll check him out. Thanks Flo.
I remember when he was coming up. Very good prospect and one that some thought was going to go a long way. He was durable with good power. Remember the Breland fight as well as some of his matches with guys like Maysonet. Meldrick Taylor schooling him for 12 rounds was one of the best showings of Taylor’s career in my opinion.
He was actually an under achiever and he was talented but would have massive lay offs throughout his career. And he could sleep walk on occasion. He seemed never to commit to boxing after the Taylor loss.
Even more so than Meldrick Taylor? I thought the Vazquez fight was close while Meldrick Taylor pretty much dominated Davis.
There's no possible way. He had his moments in the Vasquez fight and it was pretty close but he lost simply because he wasn't busy enough. Mel beat the breaks off of him.
When he fought Jose Luis Lopez, if my memory is correct, Davis missed weight by a lot and Lopez fought him anyway. And beat him comprehensively. His fight with Breland was pretty exciting.
He had his moments in the Lopez fight and fought on even terms at times but once again he had periods of not throwing enough punches. He did the same thing in the Bronco fight.
