But in the late 90's/early 00's era At 147lbs. He faces De La hoya, Trinidad, Forrest, Mayorga, Vargas and anymore you would like to add. Is he too small at 147lbs? 5'6 not built like tank. Or is his style too aggressive and wearing fto sustain against the bigger/better guys.
Pryor was a natural lightweight, who moved up to Jr. Welter because he couldn't get a shot at the Lightweight title for some reason or other. A fight against Moseley would have been an equal match...otherwise the Big Boy's would have been too much in long fights.
I'd have thought he beats Mayorga and Vargas. Maybe is able to get to Forrest early, although he could just as easily get stuck behind the jab all night as Mosley was.
He wasn't a welter, not even a natural 140-pounder, although I think he grew into it. Let's not forget that Arguello's best weight was probably 130, and that he was good but not nearly as powerful at 135. At 140, against the man with the secret formula bottle mix, he wasn't imposing enough. Pryor had two fights in four years after Arguello before showing up as a welter and losing to Bobby Joe Young first time out at that weight. Nothing in the record supports the idea that he could have competed on a world-class level at 147.
I agree with you 100%. Any great welterweight beat Pryor at welter, and probably some very good. Pryor was a great Jr. Welt, probably would've been a great light. But he wasn't a big man. And welter and above would've been his downfall. Esp in the pro game. He should be thankful he didn't get that fight with Leonard.
I'm not sure McCrory would have beaten him. Would have been an interesting match with Starling, very interesting. Pryor's workrate would make him a threat.
This. I am a bit sick and tired of Pryor myth-making on the basis of his not-quite-relevant Arguello fights and amateur fight with Hearns. I was going to post that Pryor loses badly in all 4 fights, then I realized we are not talking about Leonard, Hearns, Duran, and Hagler (well, actually, I don't think even Pryor said he wanted that fight).
