2 of the best fighters in the last 30 years, how would people see this fight going at 1) Lightweight where pryor fought early in his career and 2) at light welter where pryor was at his best After duran pryor may well be the hardest stylistic matchup for sweet pea in my opinion, with his none stopping frentic punching with power, but this was done in a intelligent way from many angles. I would personally fancy whitaker to win tight at lightweight where he was at his best while pryor i would gve the slightest of edges to pull a win out at 140
Whitaker at LW I'd say, though I've heard that Pryor himself was just as impressive if not moreso there, he just didn't get the shots he did at 140. At 140 it's anyone's guess. Problem with Pryor is that we simply didn't see him against many elite fighters so it's difficult to say how he'd fare against certain styles, whereas Whitaker faced most. Either way, it's clear that neither has faced anything quite like the other. I'd favor Whitaker at LW more due to his movement than anything(his ability to fight off the backfoot would likely minimize Pryor's effectiveness), whereas he got more flat-footed as he went up in weight, though we only saw him against Pineda at 140(whom he disected within range throughout the fight). Again, it's really anyone's guess, Pryor head to head is a dilemma. I'd favor Duran more comfortably over Pryor style-wise though.
Pryor (like Sal Sanchez) is one of the most underrated fighters of all-time. Ducked so much that we'll never know how great he really is except on the weight of his fights with Arguello. RE: a fight with Whitaker, I would have Sweet Pea by close UD, but Pryor would always have a puncher's chance, because as good as Whitaker was defensively from 135-147, he was still sent to the canvas by punchers like McGirt and even Roger Mayweather.
I think most of those where balance issues where whitaker was knocked down, i can't really see a stoppage here, i think a lot depends on pea ability to dominate behind the jab whilst moving well and keeping pryor at bay
Like I said, I see Whitaker by close decision, but I could see Pryor catching him once or even twice...and if it goes to the cards, that's four points rather than just two for winning the round.
And he put Trinidad down as well, yet they decided not to count his. I think it's obvious he was beyond shot by the time he faced Tito as well.
No what does the knock downa have to do with it. I forget exactly how long it took Pernell to get up, but I think it was 2. Prime Trinidad hit Pernell with a lot more than Pryor would have and hits far harder, I do not see what a flash KD proves when he took much better shots later in the fight.
I'd say given Pryor's own balance and footwork issues that he's just as likely to be caught off balance as Whitaker. Whitaker's footwork was flawed only in that he'd cross his feet at times(was much better at LW than WW overall), whereas Pryor's was more or less all over the place, technically very flawed. Whitaker could easily catch him with a crisp counter and put him down for a flash KD, though nothing serious.
