You take Pryor from the first fight with Arguello and you put him up against Julio Cesar Chavez in his prime, what happens?
I would definitely take Chavez who had better punch selection, better footwork and better defense. Pryor was of the human windmill variety but I just see him eating so many short counters while Chavez' great set of whiskers absorbes everything he delivers… I would skip the mortgage payment to see this one, tho...
Excellent matchup. I think it's a little closer than Seamus does...Pryor was for a little while a force of nature, at least against Arguello who in that first fight was himself rather special but just could not cope with Pryor ultimately. (I'm not going to mention bottles etc.) Chavez is a bit of a different animal to Arguello though, more durable for one, and a better body puncher. He was better able to cope with the sort of pressure Pryor would bring, and Pryor would definitely bring it. I do see Pryor having his moments in this fight for sure. I think Chavez would be conceding some early rounds to the busier Pryor, and (as he tended to do) escalate things from the midway mark onwards, delivering chopping straight rights and left hooks to the ribs, and slowly starting to apply more and more pressure of his own. Pryor was very tough though...some of those shots Alexis hit him with would have toppled anyone else in the division, particularly that huge shot in the 13th. Ultimately for me it boils down to who can cope with the other man's style the best. For me, that man is Chavez, who is more versatile, more well-rounded, more experienced. Chavez by decision, in a FOTY candidate.
This is a fight fans wet dream, i definitively pick Chavez if the fight is in Mexico, for obvious reasons, in the states, it's 50-50 for me, flip a coin, im on the fence.. I like Pryors workrate, Chavez slightly better chin and more durable, both guy's had stamina for days, if they fought 6 times it would probably be 3-3, i don't see anyone getting stopped unless its a cut or injury... This is one of those rare fights where i just can't make a pick... BTW i don't give.a **** about the so called black bottle, Pryor didn't need the black bottle in the rematch and knocked him out in 10...
good fight with early explosive energy by Pryor and Chavez working the body and head for a plan of attrition win. 15 rounds may favor Chavez but Pryor could box and hit and showed late power (black bottle & Panama Lewis) so this one would depend on how much the body work of Chavez would drain Aaron. AP was also hittable but he recovered well Chavez by close UD
I have gone back and forth on this one through the years...At times I think Chavez's precision body punching would tire Pryor out...Other times I think that if Pryor hit Chavez as much as Taylor did, it would definitely have had greater effect.
Prime Chavez (tho he wasn't exactly prime at 140) had some of the greatest punch selection ever. He saw the whole of his opponent and seemed to throw before the openings were there.
True. I guess one can make an argument for that.. The first round Pryor - Arguello I, Was epic. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O39psaFgk_U
If they made the match at 135, I would go for Chavez. Rosario was arguably as good as it got, and some suggest Pryor was better at Lightweight too. At 140 it is a pick-em. I would go for Chavez, but with no real certainty.
You nailed it dude, if the hawk nailed Chavez as much as Taylor did, Chavez ain't gonna see round 15- Pryor was miles ahead of Taylor..... Im surprised more folks on here didnt pick a draw...
Chavez was a better fighter. I'm a huge fan of Pryor, but let's face it he only fought two good (not even great) fighters. Kim Pambele was over the hill Arguello was blown up.
