Whitaker was the better defender but was as busy as Pryor.

Whitaker UD at 140, but it's a tough one as I rank Pryor the greatest at that weight.

Ugh, it had to come at some point. It takes him 14 to KO a past his prime Arguello who stands in front of him with far worse defense, yet he'll KO Whitaker in 4? Tito couldn't KO a shot, coke head Whitaker at 147 while unleashing his full arsenal, but Pryor will KO a prime Whitaker? Let's be real here, if you think Pryor's style is ultimately the foil to Whitaker's, that's fine, but KO4? Not even plausible.

This has always been an interesting fight to ponder...and a difficult fight to pick a winner...I see the Pryor from the beginning setting a torid pace and catching Whitaker with two straight rights for a knockdown...Pernell gets up immediately at "2" in full retreat...Pryor is not able to hunt down the elusive side stepping, and back peddling southpaw...Pryor wins the first four rounds due to pushing the action...I think what alot of people don't consider is Whitaker's physical strength, he is stronger than he is given credit for...he did win championships in four weight divisions...equaling Leonard,Hearns, and Duran in the modern era. No small feat going from Lightweight to junior middle.
After the fourth round, Whitaker's jab begins finding the mark consistantly...and he uses an underated body attack to offset Pryor...
Pryor is never in trouble...but after Whitaker figures him out...it's over. Whitaker has the speed and skill set that Pryor has never encountered before...If Arguello could catch Pryor...Whitaker has the speed to box and avoid him...
    Whitaker UD...IMO.
8/4 in rounds in an entertaining fight.

    Whitaker by decision

I see him popping Pryor with the jab, outboxing him from the outside, and ultimately landing the cleaner shots and more shots. I look at Whitaker's ability off of the backfoot along with his ability to hold his own against anybody on the inside. Pryor would have his moments and make it a close fight though.

I`ll go with Pryor in this matchup, especially if its scheduled for fifteen rounds instead of twelve.

Whitaker was one of the best defensive fighters of all-time and his resume and ability speak for themselves, but if anyone had the right style to beat him it would be "The Hawk". Aaron hardly had a conventional boxing style, and the guy did things nobody has done since with his footwork. Throw in the fact that he threw punches in bunches from some of the most awkward angles I have ever seen and I think Pea has his hands full in this fight from the get-go.

Whitaker has never faced anyone with as high a workrate as Pryor would bring to the ring, and Aaron could keep up that hellish pace for a full fifteen rounds if need be. As great a fighter as Pernell was I just cannot see him slipping and dodging everything Pryor will be throwing his way due to the sheer volume of punches Pryor will throw.

The Hawk will be swarming him all night, and Pernell WILL be bothered by all those hard punches coming at him from all angles two seconds into round 1 and never letting up. I would also add that Aaron would be all the more motivated and vicious to win this fight due to Pernell`s trash talk before the fight and would see this as his legacy defining fight. In that scenario, I see no way Pernell beats him.

No way Pernell beats him yet it's a Split Decision by your call? You do give a fair analysis and I agree with some of your points about Pryor's style in regards to Whitaker's, but I disagree on some points.

First of all, as amped up as Pryor may be due to Pea's trashtalk, you'll have a hard time finding a mentally tougher/more self-obsessed fighter with undying belief in himself than Whitaker. He is up there with Ali in that regard, just not quite as outspoken. So you have one fighter who, while very adaptive and skilled at keeping the fight at his own pace, will walk someone down and flurry on them in retaliation just to prove he can at times against another very motivated fighter, who will rarely ever take a backwards step.

I see Whitaker taking this fight because, based on styles, Whitaker can fight off the backfoot more effectively than anyone I've ever seen(and I challenge anyone to find someone who can do so better). Also, while Pryor will be taking the fight to Whitaker, Whitaker was arguably the more skilled inside fighter. Pryor liked to keep things at mid-range when coming forward in actuality, he liked to have the space to throw his straight punches, rather than get in close and go to the body like a Chavez, so based on that, if Pryor is able to get to Whitaker, I see Pea looking to tie him up and land body blows in the clinch, which he was a master at(typing up arms to land his own blows while nullifying the opponents, etc).

I will say that Pryor's relentlessness and variety give him the edge when he gets into mid-range distance, if Whitaker were to fight stationary, but if Whitaker were to fight off the backfoot, which he did so well against pressure fighters, I would give him the clear edge.

    :rofl

    only kidding :good

pryor was extremely fast and powerful that threw hard punches in rapid succession from all angles, but I see him getting tattooed with a lot of jabs here.

Pryor's all out assault will be unlike anything Whitaker ever dealt with. Pryor was in your face, and relentless. Whitaker faced pressure, but Pryor was pressure times 2. Pryor would make Whitaker move, and move some more.

The problem for Pryor is that Whitaker could move like no one he ever faced. Whitaker could fight as well. Whitaker's made people miss, and he made them pay. His number of stoppages you say? Ok, he wasn't the hardest of punchers; but he did tame Chavez with his underated offense.

Whitaker would be forced to work hard in this fight, but I think he would see Pryors rapid fire wide shots an inch or so away, and that's all he would need to avoid the majority of Pryor's onslaught. Whitaker was fairly active in terms of punches thrown, and would do enough to win a comfortable 8-4, 9-3 type decision.
