For my part, this is the email I just sent to Barry Jones at the This content is protected , This content is protected , This content is protected , This content is protected Mr Jones,My name is Iain Shaw. I'm a 26 year old Brit and I'm writing to express my disappointment at the ABA's recent ruling in favour of a ban on beards during competitive amateur bouts.I'm currently on a round-the-world trip and although communication is difficult from my current location I am moved to write to you on this issue.I've boxed most of my life.I know that facial hair presents a very slight chance of mild abrasion (generally if hair is short/recently cut) but this pales into insignificance in our sport where, essentially, we aim 'to hit and not be hit'. I also understand the principal that facial hair has the potential to make cuts more difficult to see. I'd counter that i'm positive that this issue can be solved with a little effort on part of the official rather than making our sport culturally dismissive.Oftentimes, all over the world I have defended my sport as not being a barbaric throwback that should be extinct, but rather as the sport i've seen bring discipline to the undisciplined, focus to the lost, self respect and respect for others amongst many other attributes that make boxing the sport I love.I usually always end my defense with the fact that my local boxing club costs 50 pence a session and that boxing is THE most inclusive of sports.I am not a Sikh, I am not a Muslim and I do not have a beard. I'm writing for the sake of common sense and the value of inclusiveness in our beloved sportPlease make my representations available to your colleagues.Yours Sincerely Iain ShawNew Zealand
Get a grip. **** people and their cultures. The rules are there for a reason and nobody jumping on the religion bandwagon should be allowed to try and force the hand of people there to try and protect the boxers. Same with Sikh's and them being allowed to use motorcyles without the (quite obvious) need for a helmet. If I was still boxing I would refuse to fight someone with a beard. I beard that I may remind you sits BEHIND a headguard. What next people who practice Kaballah trying to force the ABA to allow the use of red gumshields.
FOR MY PART. Here is the e-mail I have just sent to the same addresses..... Dear Mr Jones. With the recent news I've heard with regards to people sporting 'beards' during Amateur Boxing contests I feel it is my duty to write this e-mail for you in order for you to understand that this indeed is a good decision and I applaud you for having taken it. I have boxed before and I can honestly tell you that if an opponent was to enter the ring with a beard I would refuse to fight. Even in training our coach always refused to let us spar with the slightest of stubble and this should certainly not be allowed into the ring. Not only does it prevent the doctor and/or referee from checking properly for cuts during a fight it also raises a danger that a particular boxer could have an infected cut/abbraision pre-fight which the medical team may miss due to it being hidden behind a beard. Not only this but as you previously stated a cut which happens during the fight can quite easily go unnoticed and the rubbing of an unshaven face on the unprotected skin of an opponent can quite easily cause mild abbrasions - severe rashes. Whilst I respect that for people of different cultures this may be a decision that is unwelcomed, it is imperative that it is a decision you stick by. Kind Regards
A beard doesn't make any difference, this is quite funny to read!!! But saying that if I was fighting someone with a handle bar moustache, I think I would decline also!
It was ok for Sikhs to fight for the British during World War 1 and 2 wearing just their turbans but not to ride a motorbike. :hey You are a complete ignorant ****.
What are you on about you ****ing spaz. I said there was quite obviously a need for wearing a helmet. Are you going to disagree with me on that or would you like me to come around and punch your head with a turban on and then punch it again with you wearing a helmet and we'll see which one hurts the most. ****ing oxygen thief
**** for brains, if they are happy fighting wars in a turban (where a helmet would also provide more protection) then who the **** are you to make statements about their safety. Go **** your mum or something like your type do. It is health and safety tits like you who have made this country ****. Oh just added you to my ignore list as **** is only fit to go in the toilet. Please feel free to spew your farcical hate on the forum as I for one can't be arsed to read anymore.
Health and Safety tit ?? Amateur boxers have never been allowed beards in this country so where's your reasoning for that you complete and utter imbocile ???? Nice comeback by the way - Mum jokes are 'so primary school' don't you think ? What would my kind be again ?? I'll await your reply professor :good
They should ban beards outside boxing too. Only peado's have beards or people on steam engines which is fair enough.
wow touched every subject on this page. a heavy duranesque beard is clearly unacceptable. but a trim, clean cut i have no problems against. people should make the right assessment. if you have a beard, if you have a specific need to keep it...ask the appropriate authotrity's. it's for safety reasons not tryign to bend people over a barrel.
