This content is protected I personally prefer this call over the HBO team's. Alex Wallau's voice breaking really puts over the shock and awe of Richard Steele's decision to stop the fight. What do y'all think?
Interesting how much this commentary is similar to the actual HBO commentary. Both broadcasts said verbatim, "Unbelievable! Richard Steele stops the fight with 3 seconds...". On another note, I feel like it took Jim Lampley a good couple of year to be able to encapsulate the drama of a given moment. I feel like early on, he was trying to play analyst more than commentator in a sense.
Thanks for posting this. Never knew that ABC had the secondary broadcast. And Wallou/Dierdorf was an underrated team. I understand the drama of the moment, but if you’re a ref and you ask a guy questions and he’s staring off to the side and non-responsive, your duty is to stop the fight. The bout was not scheduled for 11 rounds, 2 minutes, 50 seconds. Chavez rendered him non-responsive inside the scheduled limit. Game over.
Did ABC scorecards have it 11-0 Taylor as HBO did? Never respected HBO or trusted them after that. That fight was close.
Whether you agree with the stoppage or not, Jose Sulaiman's observations are borderline comical - that guy was protecting Chavez for years.
Back then practically nobody thought it should have been stopped. Today nearly everybody thinks it should have been stopped. I'm with the former. Both announcing teams couldn't believe he stopped it. Good upload
Back then us alleged smart fans put our savings smugly on a Taylor points win, and thus we were pissed. Over thirty years of hindsight has taken the sting out of the loss for us, and we know Steele made the right call.
The HBO broadcast was done live. The ABC version was done after the fact, and the commentators already knew the results.
