I'm a fan of Golovkin, the kid is exciting and I think he has the goods. But seriously here, he needs to fight better opponents before being ranked against legends.

For one...no, Gennady does not beat Hagler. This is Hagler we're talking about. Marv was a much more polished boxer, sharp and quick, and with one of the greatest chins of all time. A peak Hagler was an animal and the best fighter in the sport. Highly experienced and a switch hitter...

Hearns...somewhat vulnerable at 160 but so, so quick, and with deadly knockout power. I don't know how good Gennady's chin is, but Hearns would test it for sure. Also taller and rangier than Golovkin, and a very accomplished boxer too. I give GGG a chance here because he can stop Hearns no question, but I think the reverse is equally true.

Leonard...Golovkin is physically superior to the older Ray but Ray as all that experience and savvy, and was still sharp and quick. The version that fought Hagler would easily be better than anyone Golovkin has faced to date. Not an easy fight, I don't think.

Duran...much smaller and less physically imposing, but hey, he went the distance with Hagler and looked okay there. The old fox would have a few tricks up his sleeve although I do think that Golovkin would be just too big and strong. Still, I think Duran would get his licks in and and possibly lose, but not by being bombed out. Remember also that a 38-year old Duran looked magnificent against the huge Iran Barkley. May be a tougher fight than people think.

We need to see a lot more out of GGG in order to make these fantasy fights more plausible, imo.

 

GGG has more than twice the amateur wins of Ward, for the same number of defeats.
He has beaten in the amateurs more athlethic/ fast fighters than Ward ( Dirrel, cubans, ...).
He has fought all over the world without the home ref/judges in his back pocket.
He has never been down as a pro or amateur.
He never relies on deliberately headbutting people.

How you come to the conclusion he gets schooled by Ward, a fighter that constantly protects his fragile chin, is beyond me.

As for Pop, he knows better than to fight a wrecking machine like GGG. Last time he faced a good world class fighter ( Pascal) he got hurt in nearly every rd.

Gennady knows to adapt his strategy to the type of fighter he faces; he knows when to keep his distance vs dangerous punchers ( Stevens) and when to take more chances vs speedy ones with less power ( Geale).

I don't think Marvin could say that.
He showed too much caution vs Duran and Leonard, was lucky Hearns fractured his right after clearly getting hurt, and couldn't escape Mugabi's bombs for the first part of the fight.

And most of all, Marvin was finished by 32.

GGG has a better boxing brain than Hagler.

 

Marvin could be unexpectedly reticent at times I agree, but these are fights at the highest level. He did show both Leonard and Duran too much respect, I concur.
But watch him from '80 to about '83...his prime...beautiful boxer. Sharp, rapier-like jab, great movement, almost picture perfect punches and also decently quick.
Let's give Golovkin a few years...I think matching him with the likes of Hagler is premature and unnecessary.

He is a fine young(ish) fighter with loads of talent, but it's kind of a leap of faith to suggest he'd best some of the very best middles in history, at least right now.

Maybe I'd change my mind if he continues to impress against better competition, but as of now I would have an amazingly difficult time picking Golovkin over the best MW versions of Hagler, Leonard, or Hearns if I had a gun to my head.

 

If he kos Ward in 8 rds or less ( which is a distinct possibility, considering his fragile chin and GGG's stellar amateur career) he will certainly belong in the discussion.

 

Well 2 of them were natural WW one was natural LW. The real MW will beat Golovkin. Hearns and SRL are around 50:50 fights even though I will prolly favor the ol school legends. Duran would be too small.

 

Ward's amateur background > Golovkin's.
GGG has never been in the Pro ring with even a Bika level opponent, so of course his chin appears solid. atsch

Here you are saying he is better than Hagler.

Here you are saying he KO's Ward.

And in these threads you are saying GGG is a bum. So which is it?

And just to be clear, i've said GGG's the more polished boxer than Hagler, not the other way around.
GGG vs Hagler would be a helluva fight, and neither would have an easy time, or would "destroy" the other.

 

define "more polished" when you're talking about a fighter who hasn't had any defining fights yet?
