Mares def in my top 5. Perez, Darchinyan, Agbeko 2x and Morel back to back? He reminds me of Marquez the way he always fires back and how committed he is to his punches. Squares up a lil too much and gets caught down the middle but he always keep his chin tucked.

He believes in his skills and has a great jab and can hook off the jab pretty well. Triples it quads the jab def kept Morel off rythm n then Mares will switch it up to a left right hand or looping rights and hooks to the body. Also reminds me of a Jose Louis Castillo the way he hits you everywhere, hips, arms, ear he's as tough as they come. Mares just needs to work on turning his punches over, throwing more straight short punches n follow through more and work on that speed but damn i love that jab, counter-punches, comes forward, everything.

But overall hes a very smart fighter and will bang if he has to. Sets traps and always gives you a different look. This kid has true grit and heart. Not too many fighters out there who possess so many qualities of an Abner Mares..

Just my thought let me know what you think. What does he have to do to become p4p and does he have what it takes. Can he become a star and dethrone the big names like Donaire and Arce.

You should be shot for comparing him to Marquez.

Not Marquez definitely, but agree, Mares is becoming a great force in the low weights.

A long long road to go for Mares. . . with a lot of obstacles.. Moreno, Donaire, Nishioka.. Pretty tough route for his career.. :smoke

    abner is p4p top 15.

he is a very sound fighter, not great at anything, no super power or granit chin but good at anything =)

super bantam. is the division to be right now, the biggest names in the smaller division are there right now. he gonne have a tough time vs rigo, donaire and toshiaky, but he should win some.

Obviously he is no Marquez but there are similarities in style. He can be a patient counter puncher and he always returns fire, throwing in combinations and always working off the jab.

Not at all. He trained alongside JMM. You do remember he used to train at the Romanza gym with Beristain correct?

I think that was his biggest mistake leaving Beristain. He regressed as a complete fighter for a few years after leaving him but I will admit he has gotten better. I still think he should go back to Nacho.

He is throwing wide punches which he really did not do as much under him.

The kid should be considered in the p4p top 10 now. As the OP said he has fought the whos whos of his weight class and arguably beat them all.

Actually he has a much better resume than Donaire who is rated number 3 or 4 by alot of rankings.

After seeing him in the first Agbeko fight, I have no desire to watch him box again. It's rare to see that many low blows, just ridiculous.

I know Abner's trainer Clemente Medina well, a good guy. He also trained Angulo when he was fighting in the U.S. Abner is a tough, promising guy, but he still throws too many winging, wide punches. He has enough power and doesn't need to wing 'em so much. He'll be a hard fight for ANYONE and I love his competetive heart. Speaking of Beristain, anybody know why Rafael Marquez left him?

You've missed a couple of good performances since then. Totally low-blow free.

He looked visibly stronger and more defined last night. The extra poundage will help him.

I don't think he has enough power at world level. He seems to me to be a jack of many trades but a master of none, good power, good jab, good combinations, good body attack, good chin, but his style should be leading to knockout victories...

I personally feel that if he can't hurt Donaire, Rigondeaux or Nishioka, which I don't think he can, he will be outboxed, which I feel he will.

    I enjoy watching him though.
