    Jhonny should be pissed off.

Russell Jr. doesn't want him. Now Mares doesn't want him again.

And he's been chilling on the victory ever since. I think he has a cupcake title defense lined up soon? Either way, Jhonny is the man. Highly underrated through the years and even now after that explosive victory over a consensus ranked P4P fighter.

Wrong. Gonzalez turned down a substantial offer to face Russell Jr.

I actually wondered that as I was typing it... Couldn't remember, I thought it was the other way around.

At the time, Jhonny was still trying to make his first defense against Mares so I can't really blame him in all honesty. Had he known Mares was going to withdrawal then look elsewhere for an opponent, my guess is he'd probably take it as long as it wasn't a lowball offer.

Mares camp and people must see something they don't like, or rather don't see something they feel Mares needs to win a rematch...

Can't think of any other reason a young P4P, supposed stud like Mares would opt out of revenge this way.

Even Seth Mitchells people managed to get him back on the horse after a far more embarrassing early knockout loss.

No. Schaefer offered Gonzalez a fight with Russell Jr. as soon as news got out that Mares was out until May or June due to an injury. Gonzalez wants no parts of him.

Ah...that is a fair point. Here I was (probably naively) thinking he would have horse blinders on to avenge the Uchiyama loss for both his own legacy's sake and out of patriotic pride as an all - Japanese world title unification would be huge.

They were talking about the rematch from before Uchiyama v Parra. Miura was ringside for that and it all just seems to be a gradual building process that appears to be far to slow. I'm thinking "get on with it NOW". No mandatories for either are lined up, so lets unify then they can do whatever they want.

Problem is that if he beats Mares the huge domestic unification can wait if the money is good in the US. Miura apparently doesn't have much of a following in Japan, which is amazing the way he fights.

Also Uchiyama looks like he is on the slide. If the rematch gets pushed to December I don't think Uchi will be the fighter he was.

The more this plays out, the more I wonder whether Mares immediately activated the rematch clause with Gonzalez in order to "save face", with no plans to actually go through with the rematch. First they were supposed to fight in December, then this month, then the fight this month was postponed due to Mares reporting a rib injury which to my knowledge has never actually been confirmed. Now Mares thinks he can step up one division further to cherry-pick a title at 130? I agree with IB, Miura is a HIGHLY dangerous opponent, and if Mares was small at 126, I don't see how he competes with Miura at 130. Meanwhile, Gonzalez is being strung along, still owing Schaefer and GBP two fights under the terms of the first Mares fight. I hope Gonzalez can take a fight this spring that HE wants, instead of merely being at GBP's mercy while waiting for Mares to come around. As for Mares, I look forward to seeing him get KTFO again, whether it's by Gonzalez again, or Miura, or both of them!!!

I think Mares realized that it was no fluke, now he wants to just go on the Multi Division champion route, he picked the seemingly lesser of the Takashi 130 title holders, if he pulls it off he will jump quickly to 135 & 140

    My Prediction
Takashi puts Abner Mares where he belongs, he does it multiple times...Nothing personal against Mares, just don't think Glory should be handed out like some diploma :nono

If Mares pulls it off, good for him, 4 Division Champion!

Don't know what to think about Mares......................he was very popular until his loss, he will probably beat Miura, but you never know in boxing..........

Considering Mares is relatively small at featherweight, I don't know what he's thinking moving up another division. I don't think Miura is anything special considering he had to dig deep in a war against one dimensional Thompson, but his size could prove to be too much. It's clear he's not too keen on a rematch with Gonzalez.

Could've swore that was back in December.

The fight with Mares didn't get postponed until like 3-ish weeks back...
