To my fans: After not being able to secure a fight with Nonito Donaire. My team and I have decided to move up to the featherweight division. Thank you All for the great support and I will continue to fight best on the behalf of my fans! God bless.

Wish he'd stay at 122, there's a couple of nice fights there and try a little more to wait for Nonito, but understand he's tired of waiting when it's not looking like he wants to fight him...

He was against Nonito also which is why GBP turned down $1 million to have him face Nonito.

You seem to be hanging your hat on the $1 million offer. Where is this offer and what are the terms?

If Top Rank sent a legal offer to GBP for Mares for a substantial sum of money I have a feeling you would have a completely different opinion.

The one million is directly from Schaefer. He called it 'low-ball'. Mares' manager was in direct negotiations with TR for this fight so it is credible an offer was made. Arum never gave a figure but said the TR offer would have doubled Mares' career high. So, we have Schaefer and Arum both saying an offer was made. If Schaefer turned down the 1 mill as "low-ball" I don't know it ever got put in writing. They skipped #3 for 1 mill and got #2 for $750K.

We can only guess at the terms. No co-promotion, Nonito gets top billing in EVERY aspect of the fight and it would be for the April HBO date. GBP seemed keen on taking the fight to Showtime though which, reading between the lines, may have been the real sticking point sadly enough. HBO has invested in Nontio while Show has invested in Mares.
