Gonzalez is interviewed by Jim Gray through a translator.

Gray asks if he was motivated by having been given little chance and made a huge underdog despite insisting he would beat Mares. He says nobody believed in him. He says there were issues with the bandage. ?) He says only he and Nacho believed he would do this.

Gray asks if Gonzalez remembers bringing in Mares as his sparring partner back when Mares was a green prospect when Gonzalez was training for Israel Vazquez, and how much Nacho Beristain training both worked to his advantage.

He says he gives all credit to Nacho and thanks him for being in his corner.

He is asked to narrate the knockdown footage. He says after the 1st one he knew it was almost over. He says "I had better take care of this now before he recuperates..."

Gray asks if Gonzalez feels his experience made the difference. He says no, Mares was ready for this and was already champion and probably will be again someday and this is only a minor stumble for him.

 

Seriously, that camera man has nerves of steel to be holding steady with her eye-banging him like that.

Mares was done as of the first knockdown. The ref tried to help him by giving a long count and stalling before resuming the action while the clock ran nearly out. Fortunately Jhonny is an excellent finisher when he gets somebody hurt.
