By David A. Avila LOS ANGELES-Abner Mares returned to form and put on a show for his friends, fans and a television audience. It was all Abner in a near-perfect performance in dominating Carlos Fulgencio of the Dominican Republic on Thursday. I could hear the crowd and it made me fight stronger, said Mares. No evidence of eye surgery was evident as Mares showcased his smooth punching and near flawless defense in knocking out the taller power-punching Fulgencio in front of more than 2,000 at Club Nokia. Now fighting out of Indio, the former Mexican Olympian showed why many call him a virtual fighting machine in the 118-pound weight division. He finds openings, defends counters, slips attacks and makes it look like breathing in and breathing out. It was a Picasso at his best. Mares attacked from the beginning against the four-inch taller Fulgencio with speedy combinations to the head and body and slipped almost everything in return. If there were computerized stats it might have shown a ridiculous disparity between the two fights. But that was the first round. He took a lot of punches, Mares said of the Dominican. I liked that he was taller. In the second round, after tasting an abundance of power shots, Fulgencio decided to unload some heavy bombs too. It didnt matter. Mares slipped, countered and returned bombs with the same accuracy as the first round. For six rounds Mares seemed to know what punches were coming and when to fire back. If Fulgencio hesitated, Mares didnt. http://www.thesweetscience.com/boxing-article/7139/abner-mares-wows-crowd-club-nokia/
thanks man. there are still somethings he needs to work on. But I thought he looked really good overall. Going some rounds did him good!
Mares looked good, but the level of opposition was pathetic. Calling that guy a tomato can would be an insult to tomato cans!
haha. trust me... I've seen worse. I will agree he's not the best but it was a good fight to get Mares some work before stepping it up.
Good entertaining performance but one to take back to the drawing board/war room for certain. I'm sure that must have been a fun live event. With the exception of Gaspar-Espinoza the undercard matches were very competitive and entertaining as well.
Ya, we always tell our fighters. It don't matter how good you are there is always room for improvement. There is somethings I notice, but you have to take in consideration that was his first fight with Joel Diaz. But I think you can see the potential in Mares! If not, your blind. j/k
if only he was a lil bit taller he would be able to make the jump up in weight with ease. I see this kid as a future p4p talent. Idk thought without Nacho. He looked good last night because his opposition was not so good but when he takes a tougher fight we will see how the new trainer is. I still thought he should have done all he could to stay with Nacho.
Thanks man. Well time will tell. I'm sure we are going to be hearing that a lot throughout Abner career. But we have move forward. There is not much you can do when your trainer leaves you.
So I saw the fight and Mares looked really good despite a few flaws. I would say that his biggest flaw is that when he comes in to throw the left hook to the body, and to a lesser extent to the head, he lingers around in close a little too long with his right hand low and is open for a left hook to the jaw. A power puncher who just unloads wild shots when his opponent is in range could tag Mares with a bomb.
Abner Mares did have a great performance last night and he better of had, he was 78-1 betting odds favorite so when I bet someone $7800 to make $100 he better knock the ****er out with in 2 rounds, good performance but he fought a complete nobody so let him fight a top 5 and then if he has the same kind of performance then we give him that kind of credit.............
I agree. Also a good fight to work out the post Nacho Beristain jitters. BTW Frankiej, did you notice anything Mares did with Nacho that for some reason didn't carry over here? I thought his uppercut (The Beristain model) was missing.
