There is a lot of talk of matching IBF bantamweight titlist Yonnhy Perez versus the talented, young Abner Mares. It would lead off the May 22nd broadcast that features the fourth installment of Israel Vazquez-Rafael Marquez at the Staples Center. That would be a fantastic doubleheader- Steve Kim
I wouldn't call Perez a punching bag. Either way, he's proved to be a capable fighter with wins over Agbeko and Mabuza, who are both quality fighters at the top of their division. While arguably the best opponent Mares has fought up until this point is Diosdado Gabi, who may have been weight drained on fight night. This is tremendous leap in competition.
I agree Maxx, I wouldn't call Perez a punching bag. He's far from that, i was impressed with the work he did on Agbeko. Mares will have his hands full against Perez, in a good fight.
That is a great fight, but I am vehemently against Vazquez-Marquez 4. Those guys are going to hurt each other...they are too beat up to go through another war like that.
I think Marquez still has enough left in the tank to go through a couple more tough fights. But Vasquez is done, he is too war torn. Win, lose, or draw this should be Izzy's last fight.
History is not a very good indicator of how these types of match-ups will pan out (highly touted rookie stepping up against a top strong guy whose main strength is...well, his strength...) On the one hand, you have situations like Rey Bautista vs. Daniel Ponce De Leon, where the prospect is expected to do well and gets blown out. Then you have situations like Juan Manuel Lopez vs. Ponce De Leon, where the vet is expected to run roughshod and instead gets blown out. Obviously, hindsight is 20/20 - it's easy now to say "Lopez is clearly better than Bautista". Nobody knew that for sure before they stepped up, though - anyone claiming they did is full of **** or is a Puerto Rican homer who got lucky. There's just no knowing until you know (ie, until after the prospect does step up at least once).
