Would boxing be better if the sport did away with the super middleweight division?

    MW: 160

    SMW: 168

    LHW: 175

no, keep it--fits nicely in between MW and LHW

if i recall correctly, SMW is a fairly recent creation--established by the WBC in anticipation of Sugar Ray Leonard's fight with Donnie Lalonde, who held one of the LHW straps.

With this newly created division, SRL could impose a semi-plausible catchweight (168) for the right, which meant that Lalonde had to drop from 175 to 168.

so when SRL won that fight, he won two titles at once--Lalonde's WBC LHW strap, and the newly created WBC SMW belt

We need to get rid of all the Jr. divisions! We need to get rid of a million fake champions! Make Wilder fight a legit fighter for a change, etc., put the promoters in jail!

Nah...Groves just finally got a title at that weight after fighting for it 3 times back to back. He finally beat a bum and they gave him the WBA title that he has been knocked unconscious for.

What about changing middleweight to 160-170? Change all the weight limits to something more reasonable?

They should get rid of all "super" weightclasses and reorganise the weights.

Nowadays it's theoretically possible to become a 9 weight champion if you started out as a young guy at 105 cutting a lot of weight. In the old days there were only 8 weightclasses in total.

I prefer there be 8 now. Things would be somewhat better reducing the number of weight classes.

I sometimes wish they'd abolish the Cruiserweight division and impose a maximum weight limit of 240 on the heavyweight division. With all the talent from the cruisers moving up HW would be great again.

On the one hand, yes, it seems like a good idea. But on the other... Even now so many good fighters wait years just to get an opportunity to show themselves.

But if we want to transform the quantity into quality I would rather reduce the number of boxing associations.

Id be happy if they got rid of a number of the divisions.

The olumpics does just fine with 10.

    108, 115, 123, 132, 141, 152, 165, 178, 201, 201+

If they wanted to throw in another around 225, then Id be just fine in having those as the weight classes.

UFC gets by on only 8, theres absolutely no reason for 17!

just distinguish between traditional and new divisions.

that way you can still compare old and new records.

I think 10 to 12 divisions would be best. There should have to be a cruiserweight because the jump from light heavy to 240 is too much, and there should have to be a division below flyweight, because there are some tiny guys who would be outweighed by a good 10 lbs at 112, which for that size is a significant amount of body weight.

No, that's not really right. In the last 30 years the 'new divisions' have just as often been better than the traditional divisions. It's no less an accomplishment to take on the best at 168 as 160, or to have x amount of title defences.

I disagree with the division below FW thing. There are only about 700 active boxers worldwide who can actually make light flyweight or even straw, and most of them move up after a couple of fights anyway. It would fill up flyweight to about 1500 boxers, which is only slightly above a division's average with all 3 combined.
