about roy jones vs joe frazier

  1. honestly i am very surprised, some guys think that roy jones would have chance to outbox joe frazier, probably it is the biggest joke ever, joe frazier had the perfect style to beat stylists, he would do pressure during all the fight and he would ko jones(suspect chin) yes or yes. actually i was surprised cause the thread quarry vs jones, in my opinion quarry would demolish jones as well. the roy fans overrates him because he did beat a bum like john ruiz!!! please!! who is john ruiz? probably quarry would humiliate ruiz badly.
roy jones was a great fighter, no question about, but he was a natural super mw. any good hw would beat jones easily.

I don't think Ruiz was a bum at all. A decent spoiler and not too bad when he wasn't spoiling either really. Not an elite fighter, certainly, but okay. But, yeah, Frazier would've murdered RJJ, is my guess.

Well, I think Roy Jones Jr. could have probably beat some very good heavyweights, but Joe Frazier certainly not one of them.
Prime-for-prime Frazier would have demolished him.

It's a real shame Jones didn't take on some bigger challenges at HW in his own time though. He should have moved up to HW sometime around '96 or '97 when he was in his absolute prime, and gone for big fights with Holyfield, Moorer or even Tyson.

Who considers Jones a real force at heavyweight anyway?
His style alone would probably give some good heavyweights some trouble, but i think his chin just fails him in the end.

I don't think he would beat Quarry, even. Frazier would decimate him though. in a few rounds probably

Joe would walk right threw Roy Jones, nothing will stop Frazier hell even when Foreman was smashing Joe's face in he keeped going to him, and Jones is not gonna hurt Frazier any more than a Ali or Quarry at the very most, I'm a big Jones fan but theres no way he's gonna last the distance in this one.

    Smokin Joe By KO

Roy would just get bullied on to the ropes and hook raped.

He had a lot of great attributes but his chin and strength let him down at heavyweight.

Walker carried good power at heavyweight. Ditto Charles, Fitz, and Moore. Burley stopped J.D. Turner. Michael Spinks surprised a lot of people with his ability to hit at heavyweight. Ellis and Patterson were former middleweights would could punch at the top weight, and Conn had much better power than 15 career knockouts would suggest.

Much like Bob Foster, Roy never really showed heavyweight power, and we now know what his chin consists of.

Frazier would just walk through whatever Jones had, and run him down.

Jerry Quarry has been mentioned a few times here. At his best, he was trigger fisted, and had the one punch power necessary to lay out Roy with a single shot from either hand. In the opening round of the first Frazier bout, Jerry actually outhooked Smoke. Roy had nothing to keep either off him with.

here's the let's put roy jones vs an atg heavy and say that he would have no chance thread of the day. frazier would have to be favored but to say roy has absolutely no chance is moronic.

jones went after holyfield in '97. they met for dinner to discuss a fight and holyfield had no interest. evander had a lot of big money fights to choose from after tyson.

Not really moronic. It's just not a good style matchup for Jones. Frazier absolutely destroys these kinds of cute boxers. And Jones was never that good of a heavyweight. His chin ultimately fails him. he doesn't have the movement, durability, or power to beat Frazier. And thats what it would take.
    Period.

Ruiz wasn't a bum, but he was a certified mediocrity compared to Frazier, and for that matter, the top 10 heavyweights of the 70's (as if you didn't know that)..and Joe Frazier would DESTROY Roy Jones. imagine the left hook he detonated on Foster hitting Jones...

i agree with the majority of the posts however...

1)jones' chin is **** NOW. i don't think we cann say it was **** before tarver 2 nor can we say a prime jones at heavyweight would be knocked out by any fighter at 200 pounds or above

2)jones has a chance against many, many good and great heavies. frazier is simply not one of them imo

perhaps jones would have gone the bob foster route and simply did not have the physicality to compete with heavies. however, as boxed ears noted, ruiz wasn't terrible and beating a top 5 heavy in your first outing at the weight...no DOMINATING a top 5 heavy in your first outing is impressive and should give him a little credit against non-frazier level heavies

Let's assume Roy successfully uses his speed and athleticism to somehow protect his chin from Frazier's shots. What are the odds that Joe relies strictly on headhunting and forgets Jones has a body? Does Roy have a body which can take monster body shots indefinitely without slowing down like Ali could?
