Yep. Hopkins won the fight, and it's clear to see that Polymath has an anti-Hopkins agenda here. Rather than admit that Hopkins won the fight, he claims that he has stopped scoring. Sure. Edit: Maybe I'm just coming down a bit hard on the guy. He likely doesn't even understand HOW to score a fight.
Neither fighter looked very good in that fight IMO....I didnt score it and wasnt fully giving it my attention for the whole fight but I did remember being a bit surprised they had it that wide for Nard.
i rather watch paint dry then re-watching hopkins-winky that was a boring ass fight more like a clinch fest
Winky derailed his own career before this fight by being 'unreasonable' in negotiating. After a while, the Middleweight division was moving towards a Taylor Pavlik showdown. Winky played himself.
Hopkins was wise enough to understand Winky’s jab was his key to success, and from the opening bell, it was clear that Hopkins was attempting to neutralize Wright’s jab. He did this, very simply, by trying to turn the bout into a fight, rather than a boxing match. By smothering Wright on the inside, Hopkins tried to prevent him from keeping his distance and establishing a rhythm. Winky was finished in this one as soon as he started complaining to the ref after the accidental clash of heads in the 3rd round. Winky was affected mentally and physically and was never the same after that. Winky did win the 4th round after that but mostly because Hopkins wasn't concerned with putting early rounds in the bag. Winky was still flustered and would become even more flustered as the fight progressed. By round 5, Hopkins began dominating Wright on the inside. Contrary to the words of HBO commentator, Max Kellerman, Hopkins was effectively neutralizing Winky’s jab. Even worse for Wright, he was being forced to fight Hopkins’s fight. He needed to abandon his strategy simply to remain competitive, and for the most part, he did remain competitive, albeit, on the losing side of most rounds. As the bout progressed, Hopkins was landing the much crisper shots and appeared to be the much fresher of the two. Simply put, Hopkins beat Winky up! As is often the case with Hopkins' opponents, Winky looked lifeless at the end of a bout, whereas, Hopkins looks much like he did before the bout began. I had it 118-110 for Hopkins when I originally scored it on fight night.
This thread is about Wright/Hopkins. Hopkins is moving backwards most of the time. Except for his running headbutts. Maybe you're thinking of GAtti vs Ward. Ok, rd 12, I'm ready.
Hopkins is a weird fighter to me. I can never decide if I'm a huge fan or a hater of his. You see the Tarver or Pavlik fights, and then this or the Calzaghe one. There is def. noone who is better at fouling than he is though. In the bhop/RJ rematch the ref knew what was ahpening, but he still HAD to take a pt from Jones and HAD to give Hopkins all that time to recover. NOw, I think I'm ready for the Holyfield/Ruiz trilogy.
IDK why some people complain about Winky landing arm punches. He's not a ko artist and never was. I think he outlanded Hopkins much of the fight and deserved to win, but Hopkins landed the harder cleaner shots obviously. Winky did look the beaten man, but he did outland hopkins. If fights are going to be judged like this as in who lands the harder shots or looking at the guys faces after the fights then I suppose Rocky Juarez beat Barrera the first time then. I judge fights by who landed the most punches, not who hits harder. A draw could of been fair.
I think I had it 116-112 for B-Hop. Wright won the first half of the fight 4 rounds to 2 but Hopkins swept the last half of the fight. He just made the better adjustments and Winky gassed because he was simply too big for this fight. Both these guys in their prime at 154-160 it would have been a better, more competative fight. I think Hopkins wins 7-8 out of 10 though.
