It does. But ZDF is like ARD a public, tax financed network (no PPV etc.), and they probably got a lot of internal flak for the money they spent on this pet, and for doing it TWICE (ARD on Sauerland and ZDF for Universum, competing each other). Even the ad-financed Pro7 stopped their contract with Spotlight because the turnaround wasn't enough, and their stars like Susi Kentikian were probably a lot cheaper than Abraham, Sturm and the heavyweights. I'd venture a guess that there was a government order to negotiate ONE of the public networks to cover boxing, at a considerably lesser price instead of outbidding each other. It got a bad habit of those two public networks to shell out big bucks for random coverage and stars, like former soccer hasbeen Franz Beckenbauer (got $2.5 million a year for just a handful appearances during halftime of national team games).
First and foremost define good, Good as in MW good or good as in actual boxing good? Koren Gevor, Edison Miranda and Kingsley Ikeke are all "MW good". Just not good in terms of actual ability.
The site that Hypes Fights reports that AA will have to fight a mandatory in September. Maybe Sauerland/Arum will still go with the plan to show Abraham's fight as part of the Pavlik/Mora show.
You are right, mate! At times Universum Box Promotion, its head Kohl, and their partner tv channel ZDF dont seem to have a clue how to promote a pro event and sell their boys to the public. Kohl's stable is full of excellent and outstanding fighters, but someone like Kotelnik or Dzindziruk are still totally unknown on German shores whereas a mediocre fighter like Karo Murat-who is promoted by Kohl's rival Sauerland- is already quite known on German soil. Smart matchmaking,tv exposure, good entrance songs(anyone remembers AA's old entrance song? ) are important parts of the pro game, but you also have to school your boys to sell themselves well when interviewed, when entering the ring, when entering the arena, and so on. A lot of fighters of the countries of the former soviet union have no idea how to sell themselves to a western audience. A young heavy like Boytsov has the potential to be a future superstar, but Kohl has promoted him quite poorly up to now. He used to enter the ring like KingKong as well as celebrating like KingKOng after he knocked out his foes. Now he looks more like a German choir boy bout in- and outside the ring. His entrance song is a true pain for our ears.He wont win any new fans with that horrible song.A good promoter would advise him to get rid of that song as soon as possible. A pity that Boytsov didnt turn pro with Kohl's promoter Sauerland a few years ago. Limited heavies like Dettweiler,Coc,and Pianeta are much better known than Boytsov. Very sad!:verysad Enad Licina, cruiser weight, now fighting for Sauerland. He is a main fighter now.Kohl kicked him out of his stable after he lost Kuziemski. Now Licina is on the verge of a title shot. Lets be honest,Licina is tough to sell-his markebilty is very limited. His style is not that much fun to watch,he doesnt have outstanding charisma, his nationality doesnt help much either.Nevertheless,Sauerland has been able to promote this guy very well and successfully over the last 18 months.Well done job by Sauerland! Universum just signs up new names and hopes that one of them will tu rn out to be a new DM or Klitschko. They frequently overlook the very important details in the business.Wouldnt have been that difficult to convince ZDF to show a short summary of all fights of a fight event, would it! Cant be that difficult to teach Chagaev 2 or 3 telling sentences in German so that he doesnt look like a ******ed clown when interviewed by German tv. Cant be that difficult to select some good and fitting songs for their fighters, can it! Cant be that difficult to tell their fighters to try to be a little bit more entertaining in- and outside the ring, can it!
How much does ZDF pay annually to Kohl and his Universum Box Promotion? 30.000.000$? I for my part dont care a fig for Kohl, but the loss of that much money would be a heavy blow for all pro fighters around the globe. I have no doubt that fighters like Sturm will continue making big bucks, but the numerous fighters among KOHl's stable who are no big stars will suffer financially as well as the countless fighters who fight them and who do sparring with them.Pay checks will be smaller, there will be fewer opportunities to showcase their talent, lesser tv exposure, and so on. Terrible news!!!:fire
