Ward is a much better technical fighter than Taylor. I'm not sure what his gameplan will be in this fight, but I assume it will be similiar to Dirrell's and Froch's. It would be very surprising if Abraham manages to win this fight. In my opinion, he has only a puncher's chance. With that said, Ward can't afford to make many mistakes with this guy because he is a huge puncher.
This is interesting. I wonder if Ward will employ these tactics. Honestly, I would tell him to try to outbox from the outside and stay as far away from him as possible, but...Abraham's squared up style can leave him vulnerable to an inside attack, but those hooks he throws are VISCIOUS.
Froch vs Ward is the real fight to be had. AA will do like he always does and might be more competitive just because Ward doesn't hit like Froch. The thing is, Ward is also technically much better than Froch so the power disparity might not even matter. AA's problem is like what Clottey dealt with when he went up in weight. It's fine to have a sporadic turtle-like strategy when the weight suits you. As soon as you start going up in weight and you get a bit softer, you will take more damage and the punishment will shut you down. It'll get so bad he will stop trying and just look to survive. No different than against Froch. Miranda for what it's worth got AA the best of them all but he took a great deal of punishment himself in the process. That is how AA stayed in that fight. AA is no slouch at 168 though. He wore Dirrell out and knocked him cold, illegitimately of course but cold nonetheless. If AA is to have any chance in this fight at all he needs to give as good as he gets for the first half going into the second. He's going to get hit regardless so he needs to take advantage of the fact that Ward doesn't punch like Froch.
Jermain had just beaten Froch(on the cards before the KO) and Dirrell may or may not have finished that fight as AA was strongly coming on. I had Dirrell in that fight at +220 or so and it looked as if Dirrell was seriously tiring and that AA might catch him. Dirrell did not man-handle AA, he out-boxed him. AA at 160 is still a force and will be my pick against SM.
From what I've observed Abraham cannot fight on the inside at all. He just waits for his opponent to stop throwing and give him space so he can throw his haymakers. Miranda brutalized him against the ropes and I don't think Abraham was just playing rope-a-dope since he got his jaw broken in the process. Even in last fight he was immediately pushed into the ropes and didn't throw anything back. Green and Bika are two guys you don't want to get caught on the end of their punches, hooks in particular, and I think that's a big part as to why he decided to fight them on the inside - to smoother their power. If you take away Abraham's power he's got nothing.
I don't think he can even make 160, and if he loses tonight I doubt there'd be much interest or money in that fight for both Abraham and Martinez.
