The Las Vegas press conference was so intense that the fighters weren’t allowed anywhere near each other. Cuban born Miami resident and WBA interim lightweight champion Richard Abril stated, “ I ride horses, listen to Mexican music and speak the language. I am more Mexican than Rios! ”

He reminds me of Jose " mantequilla " Napoles, a Cuban boxing great who adopted Mexico as his home Country after living there for so many years.

All in all Abril is right. The only Mexican thing about Rios is his " last name ". This is going to be a great fight, possibly more exciting than Gamboa ~ Rios. Why? Because both combatants are very " pissed off " with each other, want or need to win this fight badly and are very hungry for recognition, especially Abril.

Make no mistake about it, while Abril is not well known he is a very difficult and dangerous opponent for Rios. Abril is an ex Cuban amateur with a great amateur backgound, is 5'11 and really knows his boxing. He is definitely not afraid of Rios and will be looking to make a heavy statement.

Yes, Rios is Abril's most difficult opponent but Abril is also Rios' most stiff test. I think most of you are going to be " in shock " Saturday night. That's all I am going to say.

    I take the Cuban/Mexican ( lol ) ABRIL by late TKO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;)

Good move by Abril, to question Rios heritage. :yep That had to have erkked Rios.

You forgot to mention the other thing Rios has that is Mexican besides his last name. It's his exciting fighting style. As much as I complain about what an annoying fool he is he can fight, and brings serious pressure.

This is Abrils chance to shine, and could be his last if hes not carefull in there. I love his "I'm more Mexican comment" but to be honest he better fight like a Cuban if he's expecting to win.

  3. The following are NOT MEXICAN
    They are 100% US Americans

Margarito, Brandon Rios, Oscar De La Hoya, Michael Carbajal, Fernando Vargas, Johnny Tapia, Danny Romero, the Diaz Brothers, Robert Guerrero. Abril is a polical refugee from the communist island of CUba.

I don't think he does, Abril kept talking to him in spanish and he only responded in english. The reason why Abril is saying that Rios isn't Mexican is because he sees his last name " Rios " and immediately thinks he has to speak Spanish, ride horses and carry a Mexican sombrero! ;)

Yeah I forgot his Mexican aggressive style. Cubans have a " stereotype " of people built in their heads. For Cubans, Mexicans have to speak spanish and somehow show their heritage in something.

Can you imagine if Abril comes in wearing a Mexican sombrero and singing
    " canta y no llores " ?

Rios is Mexican because his father is and he chooses to view himself that way. He speaks Spanish, not very well, but he's picking it up. Either way, it won't matter how Mexican he is when he's battering Abril come fight night.

I know it's just a way for Abril to fire back and get under Rio's skin.

Since Rios doesn't understand Spanish he really won't get the whole effect of it, you know the..." No llores " :|.

You know Bon Bon even if Abril loses, if he can give Rios all he can handle in there he might just make a name for himself.
