Any man who steps through the ropes is putting it on the line, and the same goes for any sport. They deserve some respect for that, to put themselves up in front of the crowd. But that's the point : he's putting himself up there to be judged. If he looks like he's just walked in with no preparation, untrained or unwilling, he'll honestly be judged as lazy or a bum. He'll lose the respect of the crowd by virtue of his own disrespect of the craft. It's the same in any walk of life. The crowd pays money to see professionals perform. If you pay to see a play or a concert and the performers didn't bother to learn the lines or the music, it's a disgrace, it's cheating the fans. That's just the way it is.
Not a fan of the term either .. being ill-prepared and being a bum is different in my book. I mean to get in the ring on the big stage shows some, if not a lot, of hard work, bravery, and dedication. That right there disqualifies you from being a "bum"
If you haven't trained or practiced the craft where's the hard work and dedication ? As for bravery, it might just be stupidity and more likely desperation for money. I've done dangerous jobs at late notice before. No because I'm brave - I was just hard up for money at the time. Look, if a guy's visible overweight and is known to spend more time drinking in bars or smoking drugs than in a gym, he doesn't get any credit for being a dedicated athlete in my book. Just because he somehow possesses a boxing license ? No. If he's gassing after half and round and looking for a soft spot on the canvas, he gets no credit. That's just my opinion. This idea that anyone in a boxing ring is a noble warrior and a brave dedicated athlete and nothing can default that - it just doesn't ring true.
Yeah, but stepping up to box means putting yourself in harms way to an end, whatever that may be. SO I don't like the word bum either. But i've probably used it and lots of people do use it. There are other words like that, of course, and so it's not a reasonable reason for using it IMO. However, the whole babyears thing is so tiresome in a wider sense that I pretty much refuse to object - unless someone is using really unpleasant racist language in my vicinity and I won't get killed telling someone off. There's a category of fighter who is as bad as fighters get, and I guess a reasonable term for that fighter is bum. You don't see them on tv though, generally, and i've never seen a bum at any of the live shows i've been to. I've seen hopelessly outmatched fighters who just don't want to be where they are getting whacked in front of hundreds of people, but that word never occurred to me somehow.
BTW, Tubbs had an excellent first round against Tyson, landing a few long left hooks and many rights to the body. He was taking the fight to Tyson in the second, trading in close, trying to gain respect from Mike. He fought nothing like a bum.
Boxing is no different than any other sport. In all sports, you have drinkers, drug users, fat as*es, looking for "just a pay-day", ill prepared athletes, etc .. John Daly was drinking a case of beer a day and a bottle of Jack a day for years." Daly noted that he had been hungover a lot on the course or was even still drunk from staying out until 3-5 a.m.", and the list across sports goes on and on.. .. would I call him a "bum" , no I would not .. ..But as in all sports, you just don't pick up the boxing gloves and one day and say, hey I'm going to fight Tyson today, or pick up a bat and say , hey I'm going to bat against Nolan Ryan today .. There is a long process to go through to even get to that point .. And no a "bum" couldn't do that !! I hear what you're saying about the frustrations about the above stated .. Fair enough, we just disagree here
I Love you "been in the ring" ass wipes. Spar a few rounds fight a couple amateur fights and youre a fighter. I have have been around this sport in all its glory and ugliness for over51 years and guess what sport, even in the big gyms like Joe Fraziers, in Philly in the seventies a lot of guys were called bums. So, I don't know what tribe you belong to but most fighters aren't so sensitive and in tune with their feminine side that they are offended. Use to do the stuff you do standing on my head. Lots of us have fought. We just don't feel the need to tell every one and sound superior by pulling the old "untill you climb in " BULL****. ELITIST PIG BULL**** YOU SPEW EVERY TIME YOU PULL YOUR I entereed the ring bull****.[/QUOTE]
ChristAlmighty... who is the sensitive one here. I'm checking out. Continue with your fascinating discussion and cred dropping.
I mostly agree with this. I feel I'm in good company using the term "bum" because it's been in use forever and some of the most esteemed and respected boxing people have used and do use it. Of course, that doesn't make it right per se, but it's an actual descriptive word that makes sense. After all, lots of bums like to fight. It's not just a pointless insult or akin to some racist epithet.
