PERFECT IN EVERY WAY! If you accept mediocrity and praise it as the tubbs/witherspoon wing does, then you will never know true quality. Great post!
I like this quote from the legendary Lou Stillman : "“Big or small, champ or bum, I treated 'em all the same way—bad.”
I think so, yes. As stated, I'm opening this thread to stiffs as well as bums. Memorable bums and stiffs. But I think it was the term "bum" that people want to go all deep on.
The baby boomers gen I came from were not a sensitive lot. Not about nonsense at least. You have to live a man's life and grow tough. Endure and overcome. I have no respect for the lazy, slobs who slide by on 50% days. Either give your all win lose or draw, or get the fcuk out of the way and give the shot to someone who will make the most of it.
I just don't get the idea that somehow anyone with a boxing licence is to be praised, revered and respected when in fact it is the paying customers who are being disrespected by the lack of professional pride and effort. On the other hand, I'm well aware that promoters actually contribute and encourage this practices at the lower levels. They want out of shape, bums and men with no ambition to build prospects up on. I get that. Doesn't really exonerate the man in the ring though.
I don't think he's harmless. He seemed mentally disturbed in a very big way. There was a shocking video on youtube chronicling his escapades.
