Charles Martin is no bum, but he laid an egg against Joshua.
Stiverne did the same against Wilder.

Did these guys even care about winning/keeping what used to be the most prestigious title in the sports world

I'll point out that those men were not necessarily bum, yes. Louis just made some of them seem like it.

But I think the word "journeyman" is misused too, and more so. The word's been devalued.

I still think these words have. a proper use.

But a bum is a homeless guy.. there are crazy reckless people who disgrace the ring, let themselves down, maybe there should be a word for them but it should not be confused with guys who actually fight that are knowingly overmatched. Desperate people just making a living. A bum is not making a living or even wants to.

I blame the word bum as a boxing term on middleclass snobbery toward the boxing community. There is this sense that they are all bums or would be bums apart from the talented ones because they (largely) didn’t get an education and come from broken homes. It’s like all boxers are bums. Talented bums become champs and the rest are actual bums.

I'm not talking about pro athletes who are accomplishing things.
I'm talking about bums who don't train or learn to fight or guys who know how to fight but let it all go to waste through laziness.

In the real world people will call you out for being a waster, a loafer, lazy or a bum IF you expect privileges such as respect or a pay cheque.
I noticed that early on in life.
If you don't pull your weight and still expect to get paid and entitlement, and do it habitually, people will tell you to your face.
And it doesn't matter what you did years in the past, if you loaf along for too long, you'll be labelled a lazy bum.

No one has explained why simply possessing a professional boxer's licence makes a man immune from the same judgments that everyone else in society is subject to.

No, a bum is someone who doesn't want to do any work.
    Homeless or not.
    And anyone might become homeless.

The term has been used in boxing for so long because bums have been in boxing so long.
It's not language invented by middle class snobs, its REAL TALK from the streets and neighbourhoods where boxers came from. They knew which guys were bums.

Bums might fight for money. It doesn't mean they are dedicated to working to fit the ethic of a true professional boxer.
A guy who yanks teeth out isn't automatically a dentist either.

What about the guys trying their guts out, getting in great shape and trying to learn his craft but don't have the talent or can't get enough backing and opportunity? There are countless guys like these. Are they bums?

    Of course not.

But if a fighter is habitually out of shape and looking to quit in fights, there comes a point where it can't all be his manager's fault, or blamed on having no manager or support.

Some guys grow up and admit they didn't really try, others go on making excuses.

You might be talking about cans who don’t train or learn how to fight because You know the difference. You can tell the difference. But when the word is acceptable it is thrown around at the wrong people. The casual observer will think anybody who loses or dosnt have world class talent is a bum. I can’t remember what trainer it was but the actor John Belushi turned up at a gym once to train and he asked the guy “how many bums you got training here” and the trainer says “one” john says “where is he?” And the guy says “it’s you”. A guy who trains who wants to learn isn’t a bum. But nobody knows which ones do. They just call all losers a bum.
well yes I suppose you could say “he’s turned himself into a bum” but because guys who sleep on the street get called the same thing I think that could be seen as a bit extreme. I do understand there must be a word for it. Maybe tomato can or something.

because nobody calls a tennis player a bum that’s why.

    I agree.

yes but the terminology probably comes from elsewhere and has become adopted by that class of people. It’s intresting to me that in no other sport a loser is called a bum. Professional Team sports guys get dropped. Nobody says “we dropped him because he’s a bum”. Snooker, darts, swimming, running, Tennis nobody is called a bum. Just “past thier best” or “under performing”. In boxing it’s a “bum” same word for a destitute parasite. It dosnt seem fair. It is a class issue.
