According to a certain poster, all of these fighters are faster than Roy.

Exactly, articles don't exactly lessen the credibility of actual footage.

Filmed with better quality too. I tell myself to stay in the History section because the General Boxing Forum tends to have less informed people, but sometimes I don't listen.
I guess everyone that saw all of the fighters fight live are wrong:-(

Go the Classic Forum, and ask this same question. I think you're the only one who believes Joe Louis is faster than Jones, even there.

Also, the film that they used in Louis's day was very similar to the film we use today, except it actually, if anything, made the fighters look faster, as it had less frames. Less frames=more herky jerky/sharper movement, therefore looking as though the fighters are actually even faster.

Either way, ask this same question in the Classic Forum. A classic regular, McGrain, just stepped into this thread and thought about as highly of it as I do.

Well Jones is clearly overrated, but I'm sure some will agree in the Classic Forum. For you to think Joe is slow is rather absurd. And yeah there were less frames, but the quality was poor and as you said 'herky jerky' and its hard to tell from those movements.

Joe had slow feet and reflexes, he had good handspeed. That is obvious from film of him. You clearly underrate Jones, ask anyone in the Classic Forum, once again.

So we should just throw out the video footage/evidence and just go by some 60 year old articles?

Does not compute. Roy fought at HW, and was certainly faster H2H than most of those.

Oh no, it can certainly be useful, but judging a fighters attributes just by what you see on film from 60+ years ago should not be done. I like to take all the facts. Interviews, articles, watching films, etc.

Ali and Tyson push him P4P, no doubt about it. Massive difference in weight, and I don't think the speed difference is the same proportion. In fact, I think Ali and Tyson were faster pound for pound.

Jones, while past his prime weight and way past his natural best, at HW vs Ruiz, was still faster than any version of Ali. That should tell you that P4P he was definitely faster.

Thats what I'm saying. And I'm not talking about footspeed which the thread maker alluded to and is trying to discredit the original statement, but handspeed they are faster.

Saying someone is better than RJJ at something is like bashing someone's religion, they all go crazy:|

Bull****. Are you forgetting how fast Ali was at his peak? Watch him against the likes of London, Williams, Terrell and even Liston. There is very little seperating them in terms of speed at HW...BUT..Ali weighed 20 pounds more than Jones at HW. The P4P scale still tips in Ali's favour. :good
