Accuracy/Clean Punching should always triumph over work rate. Always.

Clean punching should of course be the 'first' criteria for scoring, but landing more clean punches shouldn't 'always' win a round. Probably only 95% of the time should the guy who lands more clean punches win the round. If a guy only lands 1 or 2 more clean punches than his opponent, but he doesn't use those clean punches to establish that he rather than his opponent is controlling the fight, like if the opponent is a swarmer who's pushing him back, in charge, and throwing twice as many punches... then it could very well be reasonable to give the round to the guy who landed fewer clean punches.

If you insist the guy who lands more clean punches has to win the round that would be going back to the older Olympic bean-counting judging, which doesn't work because it's never completely clear if a punch is truly 'clean' or not, and the human eye simply can't notice the accuracy of every punch in real time.

I agree though that mere 'work rate' in a close round should never win the round!

No not always. Ring generalship is looked at as a big part of scoring, and it should be. You are trying to IMPRESS the judges with your performance, and in a judged affair, in a sport where aggression is thought of as dominance, you should try and incorporate it into your style. Look at Laras loss to Canelo; he landed the more effective shots, but wasnt engaging, wasnt entertaining, and he lost...................Now if Lara had Floyd money, it would probably be different :hey

Yep, Lara is an example of a guy who often lands clean but ineffectively.

    scoring heirarchy is from KO(damage)>>>>activity/aggression.

I think people are overlooking the fact that Porter for the most part controlled the action. When he wanted Thurman on the ropes he got him there. When he wanted to take some time off he was able to.

I almost always agree with this, there are a few fighters who's workrates just absolutely drown fighters though. Ouma at his best, P dub, and Margarito, all three of their workrates were so visibly wearing and taxing on the opponents, you couldn't help but have them scoring of the more accurate fighters that they fought.

But again, for the most part, clean punches rule the day

It's all relative. Of course you can win a round whilst landing less punches, we've all seen it happen and will again. Effective punching will always should be rewarded.
