I think Mayorga takes Shane at this stage, too. And if that happens, I'd actually pay for Popo-Mayorga! And happily! :bbb
He's gotta stay in shape though. These old guys can compete but they can't **** on themselves in between fights like they did years ago. Good win for Frietas.
God damn. Popó's defensive reflexes, offensive timing, punch selection and power all look really nice for a guy his age with that much time off. (as Rummy alluded to, having fought only a couple of times in the last ten years...this was - after the UD over Raheem, loss to Juan Diaz, and comeback against Oliveira - technically his fourth outing in a decade, not second, but still...) He isn't even that pudgy for a blown-up super featherweight (and that's 24 pounds south!!!!) ...and he's agile to boot, for having packed on muscle! Veron was hurt by the very first right hand Popó threw, about twenty seconds before the one that knocked him down in the 1st. It feels like I'm way too impressed by his performance. Does anybody else feel like he could be a player in the somewhat weak 154lb division if he can replicate what he did last night a few times? Gunning for the IBF strap within another two or three matches is wise, considering what easy pickings Bundrage is, but even if Charlo lifts the belt off K9, I'm not sure Popó couldn't take Jermall!
He said that his next fight will be at welterweight. So the IBF champion his looking for is Kell Brook. I was very impressed with him too. I don´t think he will have any easy time to get a title but a guy like him who has that much of power and skills has a chance. The return of Freitas is very important for boxing in Brazil because the sport was not having any attention since he left and all fight fans of here moved to MMA. Things started getting just a little better with some exposure that Patrick Teixeira and brothers falcão got in their last fights. Freitas return puts this in a whole another level , his comeback got a really good attention from the media and was viral at the social networks. That´s a very good opportunity to improve the brazilian boxing scene as a whole.
Some fanboys up in here. I like Popo. But same with every aged fighter who has hung up the gloves; stay retired. No need for this.
He's quickly becoming a bit...bummy though, gone 2-8 in his last 10 with 3 stoppage losses...not a bum but maybe someone who just doesn't care any more
I see what you mean, for an older guy who's looking quite podgy, he's not as sluggish as you'd expect.
:deal Veron himself looked pretty shocked, like "damn, I didn't sign up for this. I was thinking it'd be a nice relaxed spar with an old-timer half my size!"
...from Dan Rafael, on Twitter: "That @popofreitas KO is KO of year stuff. Massive right uppercut, dude was out cold, hit deck face first after mouthpiece flew out of ring."
