How good was he? I came in toward the end of his career. He appeared to be dominant at Super Featherweight, but then fell apart at LW against top-level competition.
I dont rate him too high at 130. Yea he was dominant against a handlful of nobodies but as soon as he meet his match against Casamayor, he was lucky to escape with a win. He got lucky. Casa got jobbed as far as i know. His best win was against a B level Barrios and he had to put up a life and death struggle for that win. Then he moves up to 135 and beats a part time valet boy named Grigorian and he's all of a sudden a bonafide lightweight. Then he met his match again againt the Great Chico corrales and went out with a No mas... As if quitting once wasn't enough, he had to repeat it against Diaz and after he had the nerves to be picked up on his trainer's shoulders as if he accomplished something big.. Freitas is a definition of an overrated fighter and a front runner.
A ' Front runner ' can have a broad meaning but in boxing it usually means a fighter who starts off on a good note in the beginning rounds but gets tired as the fight progresses. Another way of defining a front runner would be a fighter who comes out with a bang but once things aren't going his way, like if he's being backed up for example, then he loses his composure and has a mental breakdown.. that's a few example of a front runner.. Now doesnt Freitas fit into this category?
To give u a better understanding, Zab Judah is the epitome of a ' Front runner ' and a fight where u can see such display is in the Floyd/Judah fight.. That's what front runners do.
well...he celebrated quitting as much as a victory, on the shoulders of one of his cornermen, gloriously soaking up the cheers of the crowd.
Overrated? By who? I couldn't disagree more. He was very good in his best days, a beast at SFW. Not P4P material, but not being one of the top elite fighters in any weight in not equal being overrated. In fact, he had a close fight vs. a prime, unbeaten Casamayor, who might crack the HOF some day as he was a A-level amateur and won the gold. Of course other than Casamayor, his SFW run wasn't very memorable, but boy he could punch. And at LW, clearly losing punching power and stamina, schooled Diego Corrales before he got tired, I think it's a very underrated performance, because he ran out of energy and quit. I think Corrales broke his fighting spirit, I'm afraid it's the same with Cotto. Being clearly over the hill and having lost confidence, he still did fairly good vs. Juan Diaz, another fight ended with a shocking 'no mas'. His fight vs. Barrios is up with the Gatti-Ward, Corrales-Castillo and Vazquez-Marquez fights. I don't think he's overrated by the general public. Definitely not HOF, elite or P4P material, but a good champ with some memorable moments and disappointing losses.
Jesus did that take balls... Freitas was a great athlete, I'll give him that. Short on substance though when fights got rough, minus Barrios.
Hell of a fighter. Had some good boxing skills. A pressure type of fighter early in his career. Once he was KO, he was never the same again. One of my favorites.
