How good was resume? How highy do you rate his wins over the likes of Casamayor, Grigorian, Barrios etc? The only one I recognise is Casamayor (I know Barrios, but little of him). Recently some friends where talking about how good Freitas was and I was wondering what his level of competition was like. Thanks
His resume was okay. He got close wins over Raheem, Barrios, and Casamayor. Tended to have good action fights because he had an explosive offense, but lacked the fundamentals to stay out of trouble. Showed the "***** factor" in loses and even some close wins, which will diminish him in the eyes of many. In terms of ability: Worse than Castillo, Corrales, and Casamayor Better than Julio Diaz, Manfredy, Jesus Chavez, Leavander Johnson, Barrios, Gatti, Ivan Robinson and Julio Diaz Similar level to Juan Diaz, Spadafora, Stevie Johnston, Raheem and Roberto Garcia
He was lucky when the referee blew two calls (a knockdown that wasn't and a bogus point deduction) which gave Freitas a narrow decision win instead of a draw. Still, there's no shame in essentially fighting a prime Casamayor to a draw. He had a lot of talent but he lost a step when his switched trainers. Oscar Suarez tried to turn Freitas into a helter skelter ambush boxer instead of his natural form as a stalking bomber. From that point on Freitas always looked a little confused.
Nice insight, Funny Man. He has always been somewhat of an enigma to me. I take it his comeback at 154 was a one fight affair. Any reason for that? In the end he seems to be unfulfilled potential.
No ****ing way is Freitas better than Gatti, Robinson, or Manfredy Also, going by that logic, are you implying that Juan "outclassed by Nate Campbell" Diaz is better than Arturo Gatti? Please explain.
That's exactly what I'm implying. Wake me up when those guys combined have as many title defenses as Juan Diaz. Gatti's not even in the same ballpark as peak Freitas.
Freitas went form a bomber to a boxer under Suarez, who I think ruined Acelino. Freitas had a great set of legs, he could really move around the ring. Maybe that is why Suarez tried to turn him into a boxer. Then again, I don't know why anyone would hire Suarez as their trainer.
Agree with vic. Exciting before Suarez ruined him, good athleticism and power...poor skills and mentality. High point of his career was the Casamayor bout. His style and speed confused Casa, though i'd need to rewatch it to say with certainty he really won the fight.
