He should be remembered for what a beast he was in his prime, but sadly most will associate him with two of his losses and the stigma of being a "quitter".
He was a wrecking ball in his prime but the way he went out was disgraceful and that's how he'll always be remembered.... semi *****..
Was one of my favorite fighters. Broke my heart when he quite against Diego. He had the wrong game plan for him and chose to box with constant movement. The style had him winning the fight going away for the first 7-8 rounds before that style zapped his stanima and Diego walked him down and broke him down. I think he would have fared better standing his ground more but I guess that come from behind barrios KO took the killer instint away from him.
I was always a fan. Unfortunately, he will be remembered as a quitter. That's just the way it is... although I don't think it's right.
It's a very hard stigma to overcome - one of the hardest in this sport. You need to accomplish a SHITLOAD either before or after the incident to wash away the sour memory of quitting that lingers and festers in the minds of boxing fans. Look at Roberto Duran and Vitali Klitschko - people still drop the "Q bomb" in conversations about them, when those incidents are hardly their career-defining moments. It's just unfortunate that Popo didn't have enough career-defining wins to counter-balance his own incidents, as the above individuals did.
He quit vs Corrales and also vs Juan Diaz...... ......I'm not one to be hard on fighters that surrender, in fact I'm one of the few around here that defends such action when its gotten to the point where they're only taking punishment and dont have anything back to offer. Fatigue played a role on both those fights, but what leaves a bad taste in them for me having witnessed them is that Freitas showed a lack of heart in each of those fights by not even as much sucking it up just a little bit and making a final stand. Was there ever a fight in Freitas' career where he ever sucked it up and forced himself to dig deep????? I think the lack of such fight is the reason why people including myself are so hard on Freitas for quitting. Freitas imo just wimped out without an attempt to dig deep and make a fighting stand. I just have'nt seen that many fighters in my 30 years of watching boxing do that.:?
Popo. :yep It's Brazilian/Portuguese slang, onomatopoeia for the sound of breastfeeding. He got the nickname when he was little, as he was apparently a noisy drinker.
