Yeah, reasonable comparison. But I see it much more like football vs soccer. In Melbourne AFL still rules the roost. But Melbourne Victory, the resident soccer club, get seriously big crowds. Their Grand Final game on saturday against Sydney FC is likely to pull 40,000 plus, and some of those fans used to follow AFL.
Do you think Victory took those fans from AFL? Like as in they no longer have any interest in AFL? I don't know lol but as I said i just never bought into the UFC V Boxing or UFC is going to kill boxing rah rah rah. Same as boxing isnt going to kill UFC.
The average AFL crowd last year was 36195 for the home and away season. In 2005, when the A-League started, it was 35703. A-league in comparison had a 2005 average of 10955. This season it was 9796. You're talking about 40,000 for the Grand Final. Soccer is in no way competing with AFL, just as UFC is not competing with boxing. There is plenty of room for both.
Plenty of room for both definately. But don't think for a milisecond that they aren't competing! If you were a fly on the wall at an AFL board level meeting there'd be plenty of mention of soccer in their planning. Likewise the opposite scenario at a soccer meeting. Look how much 'support' the AFL has offered our soccer World Cup bit just as an example. In Victoria, in only a few short years, the Victory soccer team have gone from playing in an 11,000 seat capacity stadium (Olympic Park), to having 20,000 plus members, and playing in a 50,000 seat stadium (Etihad), and occassionally they fill it! The AFL have managed to grow during this period. But it's because they are getting more 'new' supporters in than the 'old' ones they have lost. I can tell you first hand about this, as my family and others we know, have been members of Victory for a few years now, having previously attended AFL matches for decades!
I was at the UFC card in Sydney and **** they know how to run a top quality show.. Didnt have to wait any longer then 5-10minutes for next fight.. There wasnt a empty seat in the whole place.. I dont understand why staunch boxing fans get the knickers in a not over MMA.. There is plenty of room for both sports... I love MMA but also watch my boxing and kickboxing with asmuch interest.. The only thing Kickboxing and MMA has over Boxing is the fact the best always end up fighting eachother..Thats always been the problem with boxing.. Too many titles and too many people trying to protect records etc.. There aint any topline Kickboxers or MMA fighters who go their whole career without suffering several defeats.. OH OTHER THEN FEDOR BUT HES IMMORTAL..
so what if UFC gets a big crowd, it was a one off card, UFC is just like WWE. there a joke and boxing is a sport.
If mma had as many cards as boxing weekly the numbers would be nothing special. As someone rightly pointed out there is a novelty factor involved in the UFC having a card in oz. In the UK the UFC sells out arenas when they come here too but the smaller domestic shows get little to no public press or attention. You also have to make the differentiation between UFC and MMA as it's like referring to boxing as Golden Boy Promotions. The UFC get's whipped by Boxing in the US when good cards clash. The merits of both sports are well documented, yet people like yourselves insist on pursuing debate between MMA and Boxing. Neither is going anywhere, 2009 was a huge year for world boxing not exactly a sport on it's deathbed.
I have boxed and now currently training in MMA and i can tell you it aint a joke.. You go to a mixed martial arts gym train and spar and then tell me what you think.. I garuntee like me you will find your answer after one decent knee to the head... I cant stand comments like yours...MMA and Boxing are both great sports.
**** mate, they get nearly a million to the gay mardi gras. Doesn't mean we're all gonna start sucking dicks. Well can't be sure about some of you ...:yep
look man I grew up boxing, it is the truth, MMA is not, it is run like WWE a circus, The fighters are all Ex wrestlers and could not make it in boxing, look at brock lesner he wins the UFC 205+ in 3 fights, that is a joke. Look I know MMA, It is a circus right now. Boxing is hardest combat sport in the world, MMA is not. MMA people have not got a clue about this sport. there are thousands of people trying to make it in this sport, not just ex wrestlers or washed up Thai fighters. Dana white is a total ****ing wit and people are starting to see through his bull**** and how bad these fights are.
Dana White and the UFC aint the sport.. MMA isnt just the UFC.. You mustnt know MMA if you think its a circus.. Its a mixture of some great fighting styles INCLUDING BOXING...And no1 is claiming any of the MMA fighters have hands like RJJ or mayweather but the top guys have a GOOD-GREAT combination of fight skills.. Im unsure how u figure people are starting to see through the bull**** and that the fights are horrible.. Its still a relatively new sport that is continuing to grow both internationally and also domestically here in oz.. MMA aint for every1 but when bagging it out atleast use better points then comparisons to a product of scripted sports entertainment(WWE). Your rants are that of a insecure one eyed boxing fan who needs to relax as MMA aint going anywhere, just as the great sport of boxing.. Both sports involve men/women testing their mental and physical skills/toughness against another person on the sheer quest of in ring greatness..
Good post mate. I'm a long time boxing fan who has converted to MMA in the last few years after catching fights on youtube of Fedor, Anderson Silva etc etc. They are absolutely sensational. You can enjoy both sports and they are as similar as Tennis is to squash. Being elite at one does not mean you could be successful at the other. I'm really looking forward to the Jon Jones - Brandon Vera fight this weekend. Who do you see as the winner ? Jones looks brilliant imo.
Im a big Bones Jones fan..I get every single ppv card and seen him about a year ago on his 1st ufc fight and **** i just went this dudes going to be a champ very soon. Vera is to catious..He lost the Couture fight due to him not going for the kill.
Oh no, it's become one of those 'this-fighting-art's-better-than-that-fighting art' argument! In fact that's the whole reason the UFC came about in the first place! This thread wasn't intended to be about that! This content is protected The thread was intended as: This content is protected Not that MMA (UFC) is a better sport, or gonna shut boxing down inside 12 months etc! There is definately room for both, but it's up to boxing itself whether it remains the predominant one.
One HD are showing this on monday night. Imagine having boxing on free to air. Thats where MMA is killing boxing. If people can't see it, they don't care about it.
