Most truly front foot, action sorts burn out pretty quick. It's an undeniable and sad fact of boxing and it's a scene we've seen played out a thousand times before in boxing.

But what fighters just somehow kept on accumulating mileage without seemingly becoming shot, like most action fighters tend to become quite young? You look at the later or even mid career bouts of fighters like Ruben Olivares, Bobby Chacon, Matthew Saad Muhammad, you can tell they're well past their best. They might know what they want to do in the ring but they can't perform it, pull the trigger. They look their age even though they're really not that old. Just a lot of mileage, so to speak.

A really good and modern example of a fighter like this is Orlando Salido, who somehow seemed to even improve with age despite being an active fighter who's been in nothing but competitive and grueling matches for over 15 straight years.

Can you believe that Salido has the names of the old names the likes of Regilio Turr and Alejandro Gonzalez on his resume from his early years in the sport, yet is also so recent a fighter as to be the sternest test of multiple modern P4P phenoms like Mikey Garcia and Lomochenko. Incredible longevity for a fighter that more or less goes to war every time.

    Your thoughts?

Greb was supposedly an almost impossible to find whirlwind of a fighter.

He doesn't strike me as a fighter that didn't have the skill to not be routinely absorbing lots of punishment. And really, how long did Greb even fight for before his disastrous surgery?

Basically looking for fighters who rumbled, brawled a lot... but had a long time operating at a high level of competition without really slipping. Basically, actions, FOTY sort of fighters who didn't become shot.

Gatti had at least 7 years (1996-2003) from the Rodriguez fight through to the 3rd fight with Ward. That also included his fights with Ruelas, Robinson and of course Ward in the first fight.

Bobby Chacon from the mid-seventies through to '83 and his second fight with Boza-Edwards. So that's 7 or 8 years. It was from the Mancini fight in '84 that he went into terminal decline.

Carmen Basilio was going to war through much of the 1950s and was in 4 or 5 FOTY in that decade.

I can't think of anyone who has done it for as long as Orlando Salido though.

Maybe Duran, given his style, was that kind of fighter but he was a really high level operator who just crushed his opposition at lightweight. He wasn't in that many FOTY candidates probably because of that.

Scrap Iron Johnson was "Scrap Iron" Johnson throughout his entire career. Even Sonny Liston had some nice things to say about the guy.
