I guess because I am a boxing fan and movie buff and knew this man from both even back in the fifties, I might have overestimated how well he might be known to others. *Another clue---The TV show he appeared in was very controversial and supposedly (although I think this must be an urban myth) the show's producer had a contract put out on him by the mafia for putting this show on the air. This producer was one of the best known men in TV in the fifties.

Bingo. That is correct. Abel Fernandez was a LA Golden Gloves champion. In 1951 he knocked out future top five heavyweight contender Tommy Harrison in the 2nd round at the Olympic Auditorium in LA. From 1959 to 1963 he played Agent William Youngfellow in the hit TV series, "The Untouchables". Fernandez had an active career in featured roles in movies and on TV in the fifties and sixties.
