I can’t honestly say that I saw all the nominated performances for the 1997 Oscars but I know I loved Billy Bob Thornton’s (up for best actor) portrayal of Karl Childers in SLING BLADE.

John Ritter in support was excellent also - but really, it was an all round stellar cast.

Billy Bob did win an Oscar for best adapted screenplay for the film though.

Talking of monologues, try the one from the defense barrister in the vastly underrated Breaker Morant, also once again a defense barrister that being Kirk Douglas in Paths Of Glory one of the very best anti war films ever... stay safe movie buffs.

Rich, great choice. They had to keep the trailer for the movie down to about 1 min otherwise they would’ve been already heading into SPOILER territory.

I’m still trying to work out if Sonny was the playing the ROLE of 1). a guy who was genuinely knocked or 2). a guy who was pretending that he was knocked out but pulling it off convincingly so or 3) a guy who pretended to be knocked out, doing it very badly and fooling NO ONE in the process.

IF # 3, then hands down, best actor award goes to Liston - beating out an actor no les than one Lee Marvin for his role in Cat Ballou.

Will Smith should have won an Oscar a long time ago…( however you feel about him at the moment)

I just like to operate under the assumption that regardless of topic, Roberto Duran is usually the correct answer to any question.

You know, Lee Marvin and Sonny Liston should have received Oscar's for their roles in 1965, Liston for Best Supporting actor in The Phantom Punch, and Lee Marvin for Cat Ballou. Honorable mention goes to referee Jersey Joe Walcott Lol.

You're forgetting his wonderful rendition of "Fee Fi Fum" after (I think) the Audley Harrison fight. I cannot find a clip on YouTube anywhere sadly, but it can bring a tear to ones eye for sure
