I need to check some of this out. My Pops told me coming up how they’d go to the car and listen to Floyd Patterson fights on the radio.
I remember the times before television! People gathered around the radio! Outstanding find! Thanks a million for this! It really brought back memories!
been trying to get some Old British Radio, have been told that the Programme "For the Forces" was joined Live and rarely taped, which sadly constitutes a lot of fights... However there will be Some Recorded and in other circumstance, some maybe by Private Recordings too. always trying.
I'll tell you what is most interesting about this stuff so far (to me) is Red Burman. He's sort of seen (by me) as this hapless bum of the month that just turned up to get ktfo and that sense was compounded by his shell-shocked post-fight interview, where Burman actually seemed to have PTSD. Here, we hear just how impressed the radio commentary was with his effort, that really came to win, that he got in there and tried to fight Louis, the right strategy. This is a good resource. Second for me was Sharkey's extraordinary, gentlemanly, thoughtful interview after he was poleaxed by Louis. He sounds a good man.
I've still to listen to most of them, but the radio broadcasts in some ways put you at ringside far better than fight film. It's completely contemporary. Even the roars of the crowd are interesting.
@Unforgiven @George Crowcroft @William Walker @tinman @fists of fury @JohnThomas1 @roughdiamond @Drew101 @abunch of other guys but **** this ****, you should check this out, don't let it slip by was on page 2.
Agreed. This has opened a whole new world for me. It's amazing. What a shame there's just not more of it.
I'm glad you guys are liking it as much as I am ... I find also the evolution of the announcing interesting as radio and broadcast as a whole developed ...
