Ok i will humour you.... what is wrong with someone that sweeps roads? Are you that judgemental that you decide what sort of person someone is based on their job? ..... well of course you do otherwise you wouldnt have written it.
"we've got NETBALL!!" was my favourite part. I do half sympathise with Smith, the big wigs are probably asking him why the UK/SKY are losing the big fight nights to the US. But then they should have learned not to sign an exclusive multi-year agreement with fecking Hearn.
i didnt say he was a good commentator i was talking about his job as head of boxing within sky. As a person I dont mind him, like I said his heart is in the right place and he loves the sport. I think (commentating aside) he has been good for boxing.
I don't really know what power he has, so I find it hard to judge personally. I think Sky's boxing content over the last few years has largely dipped, so I'm not going to say he has done a good job Am sure he's a perfectly reasonably guy
There was a quite strong rumour I heard a few weeks ago that Sky were trying to get out of the exclusivity part of the Matchroom deal- the issue is that there is little other content bar Mick’s fighters who aren’t already served by a permanent TV deal right now. Smith here really isn’t addressing is the fact that Hearn clearly doesn’t spend his rights fees on decent UK cards- instead putting on the absolute bare minimum to keep the Sky deal going. It also doesn’t help that PPVs here cost £20 and DAZN costs £8 a month for almost exactly the same content. That situation isn’t sustainable going forward for Sky surely.
When does the matchroom/sky deal expire? Sky are no fools, they must be working on a gameplan themselves. Of all the sports Smith mentioned, sky show them in and around their highest level. The boxing on the other hand is struggling to get beyond European level which is miles off world level, where it should be. That must be frustrating.
Thing is mate Boxnation didn't have anyone like Joshua to be the face of it. DAZN with the marketing heavily based around Joshua, Canelo and GGG would do a lot better in the UK than Boxnation did.
I agree it will do better than Boxnation but it will still require a good standard of British cards, not many are going to pay the subscription for 3am fights every week.
Course it ain't sustainable You have poor cards being put on even on ppv To add to that you also need a sky subdcriptoon at about £40 a month min to even watch it Plus the £20 ppv ontop of that Pricey Even free to air ITV is now showing good fights
Exclusive deal until 2021. Also, the boxnation comparison to a dedicated boxing streaming service is like chalk and cheese. Sky tentatively tried to something along those lines with dedicated channels such as Sky arena etc. They need regular content- a deal with MTK would be interesting if they can negotiate out of the exclusivity deal.
Anyone doing business with Hearn should take note. He has no respect for the concept of loyalty. He’s contracted to Sky but he’s feeding them with absolutely terrible cards just to build his brand in the States.
