You want to cast "Your" mind back further, to when Barry Hearn was putting on shows in Leisure centres etc etc
Utter crap they were, live on screensport probox etc etc under the mismatchroom banner.

I still have them all on VHS, I have a cracking one of BH and FW having a barny in a car park over who's shows are the worst!!!

The opposite is true now though and women often get more money and exposure than their market value actually warrants. The RFU for example were recently going to cancel professional contracts for women as no one watches, they operate at a loss and are only kept afloat by money subsidized from the men's game. But as you can imagine there was a big uproar and the RFU gave in. It's the same situation with a lot of women's football teams. My mates younger sister plays for Stoke ladies, which is very low level stuff but she still gets paid even though they make no money of their own and are instead subsidized by the club with the money the men make.

So there are a couple of examples of women getting paid to play professional sport and not because they have earned it or are their on merit, but just because they are women.
