Adamek/Quarry: Who win and why?

Jerry Quarry would win because he faced the toughest opposition at heavyweight and would also be the stronger of the two. Quarry was also quite sound with his boxing skills and wasnt just a puncher, so Adamek's slickness as a boxer would be negated imo. Quarry by late round stoppage of decision over a game Adamek, who have his moments and could possibly cut Quarry along the way.

 

Quarry pretty easily. TBH Adamek doesn't even deserve a thread like this, his biggest win at HW is over Arreola while Quarry beat Lyle, Shavers, Patterson, and an unbeaten Mac Foster. Big difference.

Adamek isn't going to outslug the guy who outslugged Earnie Shavers and isn't going to be able to outbox a gy who was able to outpoint Floyd Patterson. Quarry wins whether he wants to turn it into a brawl or boxing match.

 

I am going with Quarry untill Admek shows me something prety special.

True, but Adamek is not exactly an ATG himself, is he?

i actually think i would take Adamek at the right odds, but they would ahve to be very long odds. He is very unproven at the weight, compared to Quarry. This is a good close fight, but Quarry must start heavy favourite.

 

Adamek has been growing on me too, Boo. But I think the speed and mobility that he's shown at heavyweight against guys like a very poor version of Golota and a not very dedicated big man like Arreola would not really stick out against guys like Quarry and most of the seventies patrol who are smaller and better conditioned than those fellas. As others stated, until he shows something more, with some better athletes at that weight, I think Quarry would win any type of fight he wants to make too.

 

Jerry Quarry would probably be undisputed heavyweight champion if he were in his prime today. The guy came along in the deepest era of HW history, and knocked off a lot of tough guys. Compare that to today, maybe the weakest era of HW history, and you've got yourself a serious contender. He may be too small for Wlad, but I think he beats everyone else out there right now, and maybe Wlad too if he were to catch him a good one.

 

Well, the burden of proof is now on you to name a current top 10 HW besides Wlad and Vitali who would stay in the top 10 in any decade after the 50's.

 

Machen is not one to sneeze at either. I'm not convinced he wouldn't beat any of the three guys you just named. You're going to have to do better than that.

Doubtful Quarry would be the undisputed Champion in any era. He would always be a tough contender that came up short against the very best. He would be a clear number #3-#4 today as he was during his prime run. My guess is that in the 2000s he would lose to guys like Byrd, Lewis, Wlad, and Vitali in respectful efforts but probably have wins over guys like Tua, Rahman, Oleg, Arreola, and Peter with an odd weird setback loss or two. He would certianly lay claim to an alphabet title at some point.

 

This is probably about the most reasonable and accurate assesment that I have so far heard on this thread.

 

Either they aren't that great or you are simply biased. Machen was still a very dangerous fighter when Quarry fought him...

So back to the original topic... Who's place would Povetkin take? Remember who was in the top 10 back in the 60's and 70's(not to mention a comparatively weak 80's where legit HW's still resided despite Tyson and Holmes' dominance). Clay, Liston, Frazier, Patterson, Quarry, Foster, Mathis, Ellis, Lyle, Chuvalo, Foreman, Norton, Shavers, Holmes, Cooney, Tyson, Tillis, Smith, Spinks, Ruddock, Holyfield...on and on and on...? I really don't think any of the current crop of HWs would take any of these guys places...

 

We really don't know enough about Povetkin to fairly throw him against the well established names of the past 3 decades, that's a rather mute point. As of now, he's a carefully matched prospect that could thrive just on the fringe in about any decade until its time to cash in. Shavers, Foreman, Ruddock, Norton, and many of the guys you listed feasted on roughly the same level of fighters that Povetkin has before being pushed into the real spotlight against the Tysons, Alis, Fraziers, or what have you.
