Robert Garcia is just as bad. What does he actually teach his fighters to do? Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the elie seckbach reality show with Garcia, and think him and his team are good people, but as for a trainer, he's incredibly overrated too. The majority of his stable are overrated, as is Roach's stable. Brandon Rios, it seems, doesn't have a boxing brain. Nonito donaire is looking above average against b and c level fighters, Kelly Pavlik has not looked impressive since he returned to boxing, and Marcos Maidana has improved a tiny amount, but is still the same flat footed slugger he was before. As for Roach, well it's not hard to see that his stable is overrated. Many people have pretty much said this for a long time now, but I didn't believe it at first. Now I understand what everything is talking about when they say he's an overrated trainer. Granted, he improved Khan quite a bit, but lets be honest, Khan's speed is what made him different to a lot of other fighters. And at the time, Khan was fed with average fighters to protect his vulnerability and punch resistance. I still think Khan can become Champ again, and I feel it was the best decision to leave Roach. As for Pacquiao, well we all know that him and his team like to drain their opponents, so he looks like a god against them. But in reality, he continually refuses to fight top level guys. Why can't he go up to 154? Why does Roach always come out with an excuse and say Pacquiao can't fight at that weight any more, yet he looked like he still had the speed and power when he fought Margarito......EXCUSES, EXCUSES!! And Chavez jnr is just living off his dad's name. The guy is as slow as f**k, he doesn't know how to use a jab, he just goes forward with his guard up and tries to out muscle his opponents due to his weight advantage. The guy tried this against Martinez, only getting any success when pushing Martinez against the ropes. Sure, he got the knockdown in the 12th, and could of finished him, but he just doesn't know how to finish. Lets be honest, Roach and Garcia are both overrated as heck.
Garcia did a hell of a job helping Maidana improve his overall game. Just look at Marcos performance last night as proof of Garcia's excellent work. I do agree about Roach though, he's really only been successful training Pac, but Pac has been as good as he has been because of his physical gifts. That's why Roach's teachings don't work for these other big name fighters that use him as a hired gun. If they don't have similar physical gifts/athletic ability Freddy is really not of much use for them.
Granted, Garcia has improved Maidana a little bit. He has taught him to box a bit more, but to be honest, Maidana goes back to the same way of fighting as before. He was getting out punched last night by Soto-Karass, but if it wasn't for Maidana's chin, he would of been out of there. Maidana is a beast though, I'll admit that. Garcia's fighters have just not impressed me at all. You don't look at his stable and say "wow, he's a great boxer" because none of them are in my opinion.
