While I don't think Foreman is a "horrendous" pick, how is Foreman your pick for most marketable when Ali is right there? Yes, Foreman in the 90s was incredibly likable, but Ali was a worldwide global superstar and still ranks among the No. 1 athletes on lists above Michael Jordan, Messi, and Usain Bolt.
Agreed. But the biggest? The most marketable? Unless I misinterpreted the piece that was what was being debated. To paraphrase another quote, for me, no Ali no party... Foreman definitely made a lot of hay with the sunshine his later career made, no arguments here.
In general, he's probably on the better end of the boxing social media bunch. And, tbf, I always thought he seemed like a decent bloke. But his in-ring post fight interviews etc are pretty weak, IMO. It's not necessarily his fault, as it's a big ask. But I do miss the days of seeing really experienced, slick professionals doing their thing. The likes of Ian Darke etc. I don't really get the rise of the social media brigade to the highest broadcast echelons.
None of these wannabe sports journalists have their heart in boxing, at least initially. They bounce around from sport to sport trying to find traction. Most of them would be happier with a more regular, marquee sport. The rare exception is a guy like Kellerman who started in boxing, and he's so goddamn awful that I wish he stuck to some sport I don't follow.
Gareth Edward's is worse. He's more of a fan boy than a boxing pundit. Also I think old George Foreman would easily destroy today's heavyweights including Moses Itouma and do it rather easily.
Most of these YT & radio talking heads are clueless recency bias fan boys... i bet 90% of them can't name 10 boxers pre 1960.. they prob think Terence Crawford, FMJ & Oleksandr Usyk are all top 10 GOATs.. They wouldn't have a clue who Jimmy Mclarnin, Benny Leonard Joe Gans & Mickey Walker are... i can't stand listening to any of em.. Michael Montero is the only one i bother with & even he can be a bit over the top with the recency stuff..
im surprised nobody took Jake Paul for marketability. He’s got no other attribute you’d want to use anyway, and he is, unfortunately but impressively, the greatest self promoter of all time. A journeyman level fighter who generates more eyeballs and money than anybody not named Saul Alvarez — that’s absolutely insane when you think about it. Imagine if he was actually good!
Ade got noticed because of the really high quality production values of his Youtube boxing channel. He put in a lot of effort into the appearance and editing of his videos. He saw it as a career, and he had made his breakthrough into the mainstream. Liam Gough has more knowledge and has managed to appear alongside him here because he made friends with Ade.
